Democracy isn’t just a word you hear around election season.

It shows up in the everyday stuff like who represents your neighborhood, what gets decided at the State House, what happens in your community and whether you have a say in those decisions.

November 3 is Alabama’s next General Election. Knowing how our elections work is part of knowing how to use your voice.

Don’t just say you disagree. Tell them what you see.

The proposed Census changes could affect communities in ways that aren’t always obvious. That’s why detailed public comments matter.

Share what concerns you, add data or other information that backs it up, and help create a public record that can be used to keep checking what happens next.

Take a closer look at what the Census numbers can mean for your community.

The Census can feel like something that happens every 10 years and then disappears into the background. So changes to the rules can have a real impact on how our communities are seen and understood.

Florida is part of the South, and the redistricting battles happening there are part of a larger story playing out across the region.

The South has long been a testing ground for policies and political strategies that can shape what comes next for the rest of the country. But it is also a testing ground for something else: what’s possible when people organize, speak up, and push back.

From Florida to Alabama and across the South, people are showing that communities don’t have to sit back while their districts and their voices are reshaped around them.

So goes the South, so goes the nation.

What if the way your district is drawn affects who you get to choose from?

Redistricting can sound like a technical process about maps. But at the end of the day, those decisions can shape the candidates voters are left to choose between.

If you already feel like your elected officials aren’t listening, having a fair choice at the ballot box matters. Your vote should give you an opportunity to choose someone who will listen to your concerns, respond to your needs, and be accountable to your community.

That’s why fair maps matter.

Every voter deserves an equal voice in choosing who represents them, not a system that limits their choices before they ever get to the ballot.

The lines may be drawn on a map, but the consequences show up in our communities.

"Counting has never been separate from power in this country."

AV's ED Anneshia Hardy sat down with The Root to talk about the proposed Census changes, the long history of Black people being counted without being fully represented, and why “colorblindness” can still leave power untouched.

That history matters now. Because when the rules of the count change, we have to ask: Who gets seen? Who gets represented? And who gets easier to overlook?

We’ve got the wisdom. We’ve got the energy. What happens when we bring them together?

The stories we tell today become something the next generation can carry, remix, and build on.

That’s the future we’re imagining with the Southern Narrative Project .
