Juanica, Executive Director of State Voices Florida, reflects on the cost of dividing communities and the dilution of Black voices.

When district lines separate neighbors and communities with shared interests, they can weaken the collective power those communities have to advocate for what they need.

The result can be less representation, fewer resources, and communities left without the voice they deserve at the decision-making table.

A lot has changed since the Callais decision dropped, but one thing has not. The decisions made in those rooms still shape what happens in our communities.

Artists and organizers reminded us through Shape The Field Collective’s “Revelations” that representation is not just about politics. It is about being seen, heard, and valued.

With municipal elections coming up, that matters close to home. The people making decisions about our neighborhoods, schools, roads, resources, and communities are on the ballot too.

Politics does not only happen at the Statehouse. It shows up where we live.

Young people don’t need another lecture about why they should care. They need the information, support, and spaces to feel ready to participate.

Because Alabama still has work to do. Recent research found that youth voter turnout in Alabama has trailed the national youth turnout rate by 5–8 percentage points in recent elections.

So we’re building the support system Nigel talked about.

For the first-time voter figuring it out.

The Alabama Election Protection Coalition received reports of electioneering at the Houston Hill polling location involving Montgomery City Council District 3 candidate Mark Bailey.

The report was escalated to the Chief Poll Inspector and the Montgomery County Election Office for review.

Electioneering at or around polling locations can interfere with voters’ ability to cast their ballots free from campaign influence. Election protection means documenting concerns, reporting them through the proper channels, and helping ensure voters can exercise their rights without interference.

A good reel doesn’t just tell you what happened. It makes you feel something.

Especially when we’re telling stories about people and communities, the human part can’t be an afterthought. The eyes, the voice, the pause, the movement. Those little details can be the difference between somebody scrolling past and somebody stopping to listen.

And in a world where attention is short, you have to give people a reason to stay.

For storytellers in the South, that means leading with what feels real. Don’t bury the moment. Don’t make people work to find the story.

Make them feel it first. Then show them why it matters.

What does the fight for fair representation actually look like?

A'Niya Robinson, Director of Policy and Organizing at the ACLU of Alabama, shares what fair representation means for Alabama communities, and why this fight is about more than congressional maps.

It’s about whether people have a real voice in the decisions shaping their families, neighborhoods, jobs, and futures.

The fight doesn’t only happen in courtrooms or at the State House. It also depends on everyday people staying informed, speaking up, and standing alongside the organizations doing this work.

There’s a place for all of us in this fight. Stay connected to what’s happening, tap in with organizations like the ACLU of Alabama and Southern Poverty Law Center doing the work, and find ways to show up with your community.

Septima Poinsette Clark used education as a tool for liberation, helping communities gain the skills and confidence needed to participate fully in democracy. She showed that teaching people their rights was a powerful form of organizing.

Access to information still shapes who can make their voices heard.

Civic education should be accessible to everyone, so people have the knowledge and confidence to understand their rights, navigate the systems that impact them, and participate in our democracy.

Black August was born from resistance. What began among incarcerated Black activists became a time to honor political prisoners, freedom fighters, and the movements that challenged systems of oppression.

That spirit runs deep in Alabama. From Rosa Parks and Fred Shuttlesworth to the organizers of the Lowndes County Freedom Organization, Black Alabamians built power by refusing to accept injustice as the way things had to be.

Their impact came from courage, lived experience, collective action, and a commitment to creating something different for their communities.

This Black August, dig deeper into the history, recognize the resistance that shaped Alabama, and consider how you can use your own voice and power in your community today.
