Almost 200 — and still standing.

The Custom House has been the anchor of Monterey's waterfront since 1827, and in 2027 it turns 200 years old. Getting there takes work. Last year, the historic porches were fully restored. Later this summer, floors that have held the footsteps of traders, diplomats, and visitors for over a century will be refinished.

The building is very much alive in the meantime. The Custom House Store and Museum are open — step inside to learn why this structure was the most important building in early California, where all foreign goods entering the territory had to be assessed before they could be sold. Then stop by the store and take a little piece of Monterey history home with you.

Two hundred years is worth celebrating. Come be part of it.

A Preservation Success — and a story worth telling.

California's First Brick House has been part of Monterey since 1847. Built as a private residence, it later became the beloved Mama Garcia's Restaurant before time — and weather — began taking their toll. Last year, State Parks replaced nearly a quarter of the building's failing bricks. A serious undertaking, done right.

It's open again. Stop by any day from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. — free admission. Inside, you'll find the story of the original builder, the legacy of the restaurant, and the urban renewal battle that nearly erased this landmark for good.
