Monterey Village Community support of Monterey County older adults to continue living successfully in our own homes as we age

10/15/2026

Did you know?
โ€œBetween 2024 and 2025, the number of unhoused people age 65+ increased by 6.8%. Homelessness also increased for people between the ages of 45-54. For most other age groups, homelessness decreased.

A recent survey of Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs) found that 94% of AAAs identified lack of affordable housing as a major challenge. The US Interagency Council on Homelessness has also identified that many homelessness systems of care are not equipped to serve older adults.โ€ https://homebase.shorthandstories.com/PIT/

In the Dutch city of Deventer, there's a retirement home with some unusual residents.

Living alongside about 160 seniors are a handful of university students.

And they don't pay a cent in rent.

The home is called Humanitas Deventer. Years ago, its director, Gea Sijpkes, received a letter from a student complaining about the noise and terrible conditions in student housing.

She had an idea.

Her building had some small apartments that weren't ideal for elderly residents. They'd be perfect for students. So she made them an offer.

Live here for free. In exchange, spend at least 30 hours a month being a good neighbor.

That's it. No nursing duties. Just company.

The students watch sports with the residents. They celebrate birthdays together. They cook simple dinners, share stories, and sit with people when they're sick.

One student moved in at 19. His neighbor was 72 years older than him. When he got home from class, he'd stop by and visit her for an hour.

The students can come and go as they please, and even have friends over. There's only one real rule.

Don't be a nuisance to the elderly.

"It's important not to isolate the elderly from the outside world," Sijpkes said.

One of the residents put it best.

The students bring the outside world in ๐Ÿ’›

You don't have a "Medicare file" that needs updating. If you get a call saying your Medicare file needs to be updated, hang up. Medicare isnโ€™t asking for this; itโ€™s a scam. If you did confirm or give out your Medicare number, report it to the SMP.

๐Ÿ“ฌ Our September Newsletter is out โ€” and it is full of important updates and information affecting older adults, Medicare beneficiaries, immigrants, and the people who care for them. Here's your preview ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ’ฐ Medicare Advantage: $1 Trillion in Overpayments โ€” While Sicker People Get Left Behind
A new CBO analysis projects MA costs the government 15% more per enrollee than Traditional Medicare โ€” adding up to roughly $1 trillion in overpayments over the next decade. And a landmark JAMA Health Forum study of 1 million+ MA beneficiaries found that people who develop serious health conditions are significantly more likely to leave their MA plan โ€” regardless of whether it's a 4 or 5-star plan. The government is paying more. Sicker people are getting less.

๐ŸŒŽ Public Charge Rule Takes Effect September 18 โ€” What Older Immigrants Need to Know
A sweeping new federal public charge rule goes into effect on 9/18 โ€” but it does NOT apply to most immigrants. We break down exactly who is affected and who isn't, which benefits can be counted, what earned benefits like Medicare are NOT counted, and where to get trusted help. This is essential reading for advocates, caregivers, and immigrant communities.

๐Ÿ  Health Net Is Cutting Assisted Living Coverage for 3,500 Vulnerable Californians
Health Net is terminating its Assisted Living Facility Transitions benefit at the end of 2026 โ€” and most affected members don't even know it yet. We share the real human stories, what you can do if you or a loved one is affected, and why this crisis highlights the urgent need for the Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) Access Act.

๐Ÿฅ Two New Bills Would Transform Home Care in America
The Medicare at Home Act would add personal care to Medicare Part B. The HCBS Access Act would make home and community-based services a mandatory Medicaid benefit. Together, they could fundamentally change how older adults access care in their own homes. California Health Advocates supports both.

๐Ÿ† Celebrating Catherina Isidro โ€” National SMP Leadership Award Winner!
We are still celebrating! Our Executive Director Catherina Isidro received the prestigious Barbara McGinity National SMP Leadership Award โ€” nominated by SMP colleagues from across the country. Her colleagues say it best: "An inspiring leader who leads and serves with her heart โ€” thanks to her, we are now an SMP 2.0." ๐ŸŽ‰

๐Ÿšจ Scam Alert: Delete Any "MyChart Medicare Kit" Email Immediately
A widespread phishing scam is impersonating MyChart to steal Medicare numbers. More than 30 health systems have already warned patients. Delete it. Don't click. Report to California SMP at 1-855-613-7080.
