During a recent hike at Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District (MPRPD)'s Palo Corona Regional Park, Big Sur Land Trust's Youth Leader Jenayah spotted a bobcat taking a catnap and snapped this photo through her binoculars! 😻

Sunrise hike from Echo Ridge, encouraging each other up the hills we all came to secretly love, tasty food, and an epic shooting star. 🌄 👣 💫 We couldn’t have asked for a better group to pilot Big Sur Land Trust’s first backpacking camp at Mitteldorf Preserve last weekend! Here’s to the Founding Campers and their legacy as the team so dubbed and forever remembered as “The Electric Blues."

Congratulations to Javen and Gaberiel, Big Sur Land Trust Youth Leaders, who helped put on a successful final Day Camp of the season! Javen and Gaberiel helped campers attending with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County create original works of art with found natural items on the beach and make a stand for stewardship in the piles and piles of ice plant they learned how to responsibly remove from the sensitive dune habitat.

Here’s a peek into our first-ever youth day camp at Martin Dunes last weekend! Campers were instructed on how to navigate dune slopes to remove risk-posing patches of ice plant while being mindful of sensitive native flora. Big thanks to Girls' Health in Girls' Hands for bringing together such a great group of humans and contributing to this multi-year restoration effort! 🙌

This camp and more to come were also made possible through a WHALE TAIL® grant from the California Coastal Commission. Thanks to those of you who purchased a WHALE TAIL® License Plate or donated to the Protect Our Coast and Oceans Fund on the California state tax form!

Meet Youth Leaders Arisbeth and Briana who kicked off the YLP season with flying colors (or more accurately flying plaster!) at Ciclovía South County a few weeks ago. With their help, over 40 people walked away with their very own plaster animal track casts. 🐾

👋 Arisbeth is a recent high school graduate and a two-time BSLT camp alumni. She was previously a camper and remembers the hikes, playing instruments, and creating new friendships in the summer camp of 2018. Arisbeth really enjoys going for walks at the beach and spending time in nature. She likes to make everyone around her feel welcomed and to ensure a fun camp experience.

👋 Briana hasn’t gone to camp (yet!), but nevertheless shines with camp spirit and is a natural at making everyone around her feel included. She loves the outdoors and traveling with her family.

Meet Johnny, a Big Sur Land Trust Youth Leader! 👋

Last weekend, Johnny continued his leadership journey by helping volunteers clear a trail at Big Sur Land Trust’s Songbird Preserve. Johnny says, “I’m a two-time Glen Deven Ranch camp alumni and a recent high school graduate. I enjoy being out in nature and going for hikes, and I’m excited to play games with you all!”

Get outside this weekend and catch up with Big Sur Land Trust at Ciclovía South County in Soledad! Visit our booth to create your own animal track out of plaster and learn about the progress being made to build a park at Carr Lake!

Ciclovía is an open-street, car-free event where the community can participate in health-related activities and learn about local resources and c***ect with the community. We hope to see you there!
