Scouts BSA encourages units to perform service projects. The scout slogan, “Do a good turn daily” is part of the service project goals for scouting units. This teaches the scouts teamwork while doing good for the community. Sometimes the scouts design the project on their own or a community member comes to the units asking for help.
Scouts BSA Troop 307 and Scouts BSA Troop 1307 were asked by community member Dr. Pence, with Pence Pediatrics and Children’s Specialty Clinic of the San Luis Valley, if they would be willing to perform a service project for their outdoor play/sensory area. The scouts agreed to the project and helped with two different service projects. The first part of the project they painted the inside fence in a blue and green wave scheme.
The second half of the project the scouts designed, created, and installed a caterpillar sensory board for the youth at the facility to play with. Each scout family was given a circle and they picked the type of sensory circle (touch, sound, movement, & sight) they would make. They brought the circles together to create the sensory caterpillar board. On May 21, 2024 our scout units installed the board in the Pence Pediatrics outdoor/sensory area. Their teamwork shined through and Dr. Pence and her team were thrilled with the final product.
“Thank you again to the troops, troop leaders, and parents for tackling this project and do(ing) such an amazing job! We're so blessed to be a recipient of their hard work and time and our proud to share with the greater community the way that they're serving and contributing to make our community a better place.“ - Dr. Mikaila Pence
Thank you, Dr. Pence for approaching our unit to ask for help.
