A mama cat and her seven kittens were recently found living in a basement alongside two kittens who sadly did not survive. The surviving family arrived with fleas and medical concerns that meant taking them in would require immediate care—and significant resources.

After several other rescues were unable to accept them, Cameron Animal Rescue said yes. 💙

To help make that lifesaving “yes” possible, Friends of Montclair Animals (FOMAS), a program of Partners in Animal Welfare, provided a $1,000 grant to help offset the cost of caring for this little family.

This is exactly what FOMAS funding is designed to do: provide financial support where it is needed most, helping remove barriers that place animals at risk and strengthening the resources available to care for them.

We are incredibly grateful to Dr. Houston and the Cameron Animal Hospital team for continuing to step forward for animals with nowhere else to go. Taking in eight animals at once is no small commitment, particularly when they arrive needing medical attention.

And we’re grateful to our supporters. Your generosity gives FOMAS the ability to stand behind organizations like Cameron when they open their doors and say, “We’ll help.” 🐱❤️

Seven tiny lives and one deserving mama now have a chance because a community came together to make sure they weren’t turned away again.

Jewel was rushed to an emergency hospital in critical condition after a Good Samaritan witnessed her being hit by a car. She arrived in excruciating pain with a shattered pelvis, pulmonary contusions, abdominal fluid, bloody urine, and difficulty breathing.

Her injuries were extensive, and her care began immediately.

Jewel required oxygen, pain medication, hospitalization, and close monitoring as the veterinary team worked to stabilize her. And slowly, there were signs of progress. Her breathing improved. She was able to go to the bathroom on her own. And incredibly, despite multiple pelvic fractures on both sides, she even began to walk.

But Jewel still has a long road ahead.

Her recovery will require approximately six weeks of strict crate rest, continued medical monitoring, follow-up imaging, pain management, and potentially additional procedures.

Partners in Animal Welfare was proud to provide Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge with a medical grant to help offset the expenses associated with Jewel’s emergency treatment and ongoing care.

Cases like Jewel’s can create an enormous and unexpected financial burden for animal welfare organizations. By providing targeted medical funding to shelters and rescues throughout New Jersey, Partners in Animal Welfare helps ensure organizations have additional resources to provide critical care when animals need it most.

Despite everything Jewel has endured, we’re told she has remained incredibly sweet with the people caring for her. Now, with lifesaving emergency treatment behind her and weeks of healing ahead, we’re rooting for this remarkable girl every step of the way.

We’re grateful to Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge, the veterinary professionals who fought to stabilize Jewel, and the Good Samaritan who stopped to help when she needed someone most.

Jewel survived. Now, she gets the chance to heal.

Charlie had been living with a painful eye injury for several weeks. When it became clear the injury wasn’t going to heal on its own, her owners surrendered her so she could receive specialized veterinary care.

After coming into the care of Cameron Animal Hospital every effort was made to save her eye. Despite medication and treatment, the injury continued to worsen, leaving Charlie increasingly uncomfortable.

That’s when Partners in Animal Welfare was able to help. A medical support grant from the Friends of Montclair Animals Program at Partners in Animal Welfare covered the cost of Charlie’s eye removal surgery, ensuring that finances wouldn’t stand in the way of the care she needed to live comfortably again.

The Friends of Montclair Animals Program exists to provide financial support where it is needed most—helping remove barriers that place animals at risk and strengthening the resources available to care for them. By providing targeted funding for cases like Charlie’s, the program helps ensure that at-risk animals in the Montclair community can receive lifesaving medical care and the opportunity to find loving homes.

Charlie's transformation has been remarkable. Free from pain, Charlie is happier, more active, and finally able to enjoy life. While she was initially shy around both people and other animals, it didn’t take long for her true personality to shine in foster care. She quickly formed an adorable friendship with Jerry the kitten, and together the two became an inseparable, mischievous duo.

And the best part? Charlie’s foster mom fell completely in love. What began as a temporary stop on Charlie’s journey has become her forever home. 🏡🐱

Our hearts are full after an incredible afternoon of music, community, and compassion. This remarkable gift will directly support FOMAS’ mission to provide financial assistance where it is needed most—helping remove barriers that place animals at risk and ensuring that animals in the Montclair community can receive lifesaving medical care, emergency assistance, and the resources they need to find loving homes or remain with the families who love them.

Just days ago, Apollo was facing a painful medical emergency that threatened both his comfort and his future. Today, we’re happy to share that he’s recovering well in his foster home and is back on the road to healing. 💙

When Apollo, a dog in the care of Wag On Inn Rescue, developed a retrobulbar abscess—a serious infection behind his eye—he required immediate emergency veterinary treatment. This is exactly where Partners in Animal Welfare aims to step in.

Our mission is to help remove the financial barriers that can stand between an animal and the lifesaving medical care they need. We were proud to provide a medical support grant to help offset the cost of Apollo’s emergency treatment, allowing Wag On Inn Rescue to focus on what mattered most: getting Apollo the care he needed without delay.

Unexpected medical emergencies can place an enormous strain on shelters and rescues, especially as veterinary costs continue to rise. By supporting organizations throughout New Jersey with grants for critical cases like Apollo’s, Partners in Animal Welfare helps ensure that financial limitations don’t determine an animal’s outcome.

We’re thrilled that Apollo is feeling better, recovering comfortably in foster care, and one step closer to the bright future he deserves.

As we begin this new chapter following the merger of FOMTAS (now Friends of Montclair Animals) and Partners in Animal Welfare, we’re proud to continue expanding our mission of supporting New Jersey-based shelters and rescues when animals need specialized, lifesaving care.

One of the first organizations we’re proud to support in this next chapter is New Life Animal Rescue—and one very special dog named Rocky. 💙

Rocky came into the care of New Life Animal Rescue after being surrendered with an intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (IHPSS)—a serious congenital liver condition requiring careful medical management and, ultimately, complex surgery.

Over the past several months, New Life has worked tirelessly to give Rocky every opportunity to succeed. He’s been maintained on a strict prescription diet, receives ongoing supplements and medical care, and has undergone regular bloodwork and weight checks while preparing for surgery.

Now, that Rocky is finally ready for the next step, Partners in Animal Welfare was honored to provide a medical support grant to help offset the cost of Rocky’s lifesaving surgical repair, helping ensure finances wouldn’t stand in the way of the care he deserves.

Rocky’s story reflects exactly why Partners in Animal Welfare exists. By partnering with organizations across New Jersey, we help relieve the financial burden of extraordinary medical cases so shelters and rescues can focus on what they do best—saving lives.

We’re grateful to New Life Animal Rescue for their unwavering commitment to Rocky and can’t wait to follow his recovery as he takes the next step toward the healthy, happy life every dog deserves.

With your support, Friends of the Montclair Township Animal Shelter has played a meaningful role in helping animals in our community. Over time, the need has only grown, and so has our commitment to meeting it.

Building on that momentum, we are excited to share that FOMTAS has evolved into Friends of Montclair Animals (FOMAS), a dedicated program of Partners in Animal Welfare, a New Jersey-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

This new chapter allows us to do more for animals in need through stronger resources, broader reach, and the same compassion and commitment that has guided this work from the beginning.

What's Staying the Same:

🔹The Montclair Township Animal Shelter will continue to receive support through Friends of Montclair Animals.

🔹Our commitment to Montclair remains unchanged: prioritizing the most at-risk animals and helping ensure they receive the care and support needed to remain safely in homes or transition into new ones.

What's New for FOMAS:

🔹Friends of Montclair Animals will also support Montclair-area rescues providing medical care for animals in need, transporting animals from overcrowded shelters, and placing senior pets into loving homes.

🔹Funding will additionally support senior residents facing financial barriers to caring for the pets they love.

🔹Operating as a program of Partners in Animal Welfare provides greater stability, flexibility, and capacity to respond to emerging needs while preserving our local identity and mission.

🔹As part of Partners in Animal Welfare, donors will also have the option, entirely by choice, to support broader animal welfare initiatives across New Jersey.

We are deeply grateful for the role you have played in this journey, and we are excited to carry this work forward in a way that allows us to help even more animals in need!
