This , we’re reflecting on a powerful moment at LIM, when the Montaukett Dancers shared a traditional blanket dance.

This traditional blanket dance is a beautiful and poignant way to keep alive the connection to community, earth, and ancestry.

Join us this November as we honor National Native American Heritage Month with a special presentation, “Telling our Story: Long Island’s Indigenous Heritage,” on November 16* at 1:00 pm, featuring members from the Matinecock, Montaukett, Setalcott, Shinnecock, and Unkechaug Nations, telling their stories of strength and survival through voice and dance.

**UPDATE: This event is currently at full capacity with pre-registrants. However, if you would like to try to attend, we recommend arriving at the Carriage Museum by 12:45 pm on the day of the program, as last-minute openings may become available if pre-registered participants do not check in. Availability is not guaranteed. The Carriage Museum is on the East side of the Campus. For questions, please contact Lynn Adler at [email protected].

-
The Long Island Museum sits on traditional lands of Setalcott, part of the larger area that was the territory of the First Peoples of Long Island.

*Please note that the date of this program has changed from what was originally printed in our fall events calendars due to scheduling changes.

This week 115 years ago, on October 11, 1910, Judge Abel Blackmar declared the Montaukett Tribe of Indians "extinct" in the case Pharaoh v. Benson (also known as Wyandanch v. Benson). This ruling effectively ended the tribe’s ability to reclaim their rights or ancestral lands at Montauk. The decision itself relied on racist stereotypes, with Judge Blackmar claiming the Montauketts had "disintegrated" as a people and no longer maintained their own government or culture.

Yet, the Montaukett tribe is still battling for federal and state recognition today! Most recently, on June 5, 2025, the New York State Senate passed Senate Bill S.3308/Assembly Bill A.5295, which would reinstate state recognition and acknowledgement for the Montaukett Indian Nation! This bill, however, has not yet been signed into law. Six similar bills have previously been vetoed within recent years.
