We just celebrated seven years of service. The Methodist has a rich history in Monrovi

a. Hope Kitchen, which was a ministry of the Church, cooked a hot lunch one Saturday a month for over 20 years. Not all the guest we serve are homeless. We have homeless, elderly, disabled, veterans, families with kids and some who just don't have enough for food. We encourage our volunteers to sit and eat and talk to the guests. Currently our meals are Grab and go and served outside due to covid. We try to find out what our guest's needs are and how we can help. We have a request form they can fill out and if we have it in our storage we can help that day or we can post it in our weekly newsletter where we can request help for that particular item or need. We start with a prayer and try to set a good Christian example. We have had people get up and sing a song or play the piano or asked us to pray for them. We really have developed a relationship with our guests. For many we are their family. Since working our program we have expanded many of our outreach ministries. Through the Duarte Elks Lodge we try to give free bicycles when needed. We also have a closet of medical supplies we offer free to the community. Since we do not do anything at the Library Park we actually draw people away and that is good for the city. Something people step up and do donation drives for us. Ask if you would like our donation giant soup can to put in your business or group. There are items we need all the time such as blankets, socks, underwear, and We are able to play free Bingo for underwear (and other items). It just depends on what we get. We have found people jobs and housing. Some have gotten into drug or alcohol rehabilitation Clinics. We try to give them resources or local events that might help. We have even provides funerals for those without families. Several local businesses have helped in one time only donated items. We have a refrigerator and a freezer so we can really use donations of meat or other items. Currently we are trying to raise funds for a new ranges. The ones in use now are from 1944. We have spent hundreds of dollars in repairs and they are not working correctly. Just too old. If you want to help please write range Foothills Kitchen in the subject line on check or call Janie Duncan. Please make checks or money orders out to Methodist Church and write Foothills Kitchen in the subject line. We will provide a tax receipt upon request. Dry goods and canned goods are always welcome. Contact Janie for more info on where or when to drop off donations. We can take donations as a nonprofit 501-C 3 # 95-1683886 through the Methodist Church 140 E. I have one still in the box!

For Fast Forward Friday we travel to the late 1980s when the "Flowbee" arrived on the market. According to Wikipedia, "The Flowbee is an electrically powered vacuum cleaner attachment made for cutting hair. It was developed and filed for patent in 1986 by Rick E. Hunts, a San Diego carpenter. Hunts initially sold the Flowbees out of his garage before finding success with live demonstrations at a county fair. The product was advertised as being capable of performing "hundreds of precision layered haircuts" in frequently aired late-night television infomercials. By 2000, two million Flowbees had been sold."

Janie Duncan helped establish the Foothill Kitchen out of a church in Monrovia. She’s retiring, but not after serving thousands of hot meals to those in need.

Our Story

We are Foothills and Hope Kitchens. Each group is a different set of volunteers that prepare and serve a free meal to those in need at the Methodist Church Fellowship Hall each Saturday at 1 pm. We are from a variety of different Churches and a few independent folks working together. We have no corporate funding. We run on donations and have only a couple of people who give a set amount each month. Not all the guest we serve are homeless. We have elderly, disabled, veterans, families with kids and some who just don't have enough for food. We encourage our volunteers to sit and eat and talk to the guests. We try to find out what their needs are and how we can help. We just celebrated five years and we serve a meal every Saturday. The Methodist has done this one Saturday a month for 17 years but more people are attending now. We start with a prayer and try to set a good Christian example. We have had people get up and sing a song or play the piano or asked us to pray for them. We really have developed a relationship with our guests. Since we do not do anything at the Library Park we actually draw people away and that is good for the city. Something people step up and do a donation drive for us and we are able to play free Bingo for underwear. It just depends on what we get. We have found people jobs and housing. Some have gotten into drug or alcohol rehabilitation Clinics. We try to give them resources or local events that might help. Several local businesses have helped in one time only donated items. Pizza Hut gives us pizza which we give the people. We also take donations of food, clothing, toiletries, blankets. We have a refrigerator and a freezer so we can really use donations of meat or other items. Please make checks or money orders out to Methodist Church and write Foothills Kitchen in the subject line. We will provide a tax receipt upon request. Dry goods and canned goods are always welcome. Contact Janie for more info on where or when to drop off donations. Groups that would like to help can collect both men's and women's socks and underwear which are always appreciated. We can take donations as a nonprofit 501C 3 through the Methodist Church 140 E. Palm Ave. Monrovia CA 91016 or mail to Foothill's Kitchen P.O. Box 126 Monrovia , CA. We find it to be very rewarding do service in the name of God. God Bless all our supporters.
