A Life Saved Through Training, Teamwork, and Quick Action

On March 20, 2026, at 3:43 PM, a routine day at Gerdau Steel’s Monroe Mill turned into a life-or-death emergency when a worker suddenly went into cardiac arrest. His coworkers didn’t hesitate—they acted.

Using their training, the team immediately began high-quality CPR and deployed an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). In those critical moments, their swift and decisive actions sustained their coworker until Monroe Fire and Monroe Community Ambulance arrived and took over care. Thanks to their rapid response, the patient was stabilized and is expected to make a full recovery.

The Monroe Public Safety Department proudly recognizes the Gerdau employees who stepped up without hesitation. Their actions demonstrate how preparedness, training, and teamwork can save lives.

Cardiac arrest can happen anywhere, at any time. Immediate CPR and early defibrillation are critical to survival. This incident highlights the importance of being trained and ready to respond. The Monroe Public Safety Department encourages residents and businesses to become CPR-certified. To learn more about training opportunities, please visit:

Anything can happen. Anyone can help.™
There are more than 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests in the U.S. each year.

Waiting for emergency services gives a cardiac arrest victim only a 5% chance of survival. But if bystanders immediately administer and maintain cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use an automated external defibrillator (AED), those chances increase up to 60%.
