🎨Art created by Julie Vornholt, a full-time Madison-based muralist specializing in floral and nature-inspired work.

🍃🌽Vornholt was interested to express how many Native American tribes have a planting system called “The Three Sisters” that includes planting corn stalks, squash, and beans all together. You can see this trio featured in snippets on the right of the mural with a corn stalk and squash flowers at the bottom, and beans with their flowers growing at the top. The other flowers include the bright orange Butterfly Milkweed, Purple Prince Crabapple flowers, White Snapdragon, Common Blue Violet (the State Flower of Wisconsin), and Red Chokeberries which flourish with the Corn, Squash and Bean flowers.

🐝The flora represented are species that attract pollinators; there is even a bumblebee pollinating one of the flowers. The Black-capped Chickadee is a nod to Monona’s Bird City status and further brings this wall to life, inspiring the title of the wall, Bloom in Flight. The composition uses warm and bold contrasting colors to draw the eye upwards as flowers climb alongside a deep yellow strip and are blooming against a bright blue sky in this beautiful garden flora expression.

“Driftless Winds”
📍849 East Washington Ave.
Madison WI 53703

The artist known as Jan the Voyager, is a Wisconsin-based painter. This lively and colorful 20’ by 38’ wall reflects the splendor and beauty of Wisconsin, inspired by the Driftless region, in a rich visual artistic landscape that further connects our sense of place- one rooted in memory, texture, and the land itself. The scenic reflection captures the beauty of the landscape showing the gentle rhythm of rural life. Artist Drew Orendorff assisted in the creation of this contemporary mural which depicts a beautiful day in Wisconsin complete with red barns tucked into hillsides, a blue sky with birds in flight, a tractor, and produce from the local farmers’ market. The layered rural landscape showcases a lake with winding rivers and quiet streams, rolling hills, soft lavender fields, rock formations, an elm tree, blooming sunflowers, and cows grazing the meadow. There are a few figures, a farmer and a more contemporary dressed fly fisher who is a Badgers fan, too!

This wall marks the first commissioned exterior rotating art gallery wall with art that will change every 5- 7 years offering ongoing opportunities for artists and continuous visual inspiration to the community.

This project is commissioned by Neutral and managed by the Madison Public Art Project.

849 East Washington Ave. Madison WI 53703

The artist Janson Rapisarda, who paints under his moniker Jan the Voyager, is a Wisconsin-based painter. He was assisted by artist Drew Orendorff. In this piece his visual language honors the heritage of the Gardner Bakery and pays tribute to the rich cultural past of East Washington reflecting the history of the neighborhood. This permanent 13’ by 20’ mural in the alleyway mews space is located between the newly developed residential buildings. Faded ghost signs depict the history of this neighborhood which showcases street maps, old fashioned street lights, the Mautz paint icon, and a loaf of bread from the famed bakery in this historical, yet contemporary, mural.

Ghost signs were painted throughout Madison in the 1800’s-1930’s onto buildings with letters that, over time, were weathered away by the sun and passage of time. You can still see some signs downtown, along Williamson Street, and across East Washington that are faded, yet partially visible. Bakers Place restored the original text lettering on the brick building facade, which was the original Gardner’s Bakery building. The art mural further illuminates this iconic Madison building’s history offering increased awareness and appreciation.
