The Driving Force

The Driving Force My journey into the world of Dyslexia officially began three years ago when my oldest son was diagnosed. Dyslexia is still relatively new.

Mission Statement: The Driving Force is a nonprofit organization that advocates, supports and fundraises for the Children's Dyslexia Center in Bangor as well the RSU #2 School System by procuring Wish List items through community drives. I say officially because he had all the classic signs of a dyslexic as a young child: speech delay, difficulty learning letter sounds, and directional left-right

confusion. Many people do not fully understand exactly what Dyslexia is and as a parent of a dyslexic, I knew I had to do something. Creating The Driving Force is my chance to raise Dyslexia awareness all while giving back to teachers and students who work so hard to master what many take for granted. Please consider donating and make a difference to a child and their future.

We are so excited that Dr. David Kilpatrick will be a guest on our podcast, Dyslexia Coffee Talk, this Saturday! The episode will air live on Facebook and then be uploaded to our YouTube and podcast channels. The video will remain on Facebook as well for those who want to watch later and prefer FB. This is going to be so empowering and educational for parents!

Getting an assessment and services for your child is just the start of your journey. You are now not just a parent but a manager of progress. If a child is not making progress, they know it. They internalize it. Each time they try a new program and are unsuccessful, they blame themselves. So, it is up to you to monitor your child’s progress and raise red flags when you think it is insufficient.

Dyslexia is a learning disability in reading. Get a definition of dyslexia and learn about the dyslexic brain.

This isn't an easy journey, but whatever form your advocacy takes, every action, every word, every parent standing up, posting, sharing, talking, listening, etc. every action is contributing to change. Never give up. Our children, both those in school today and those generations to follow, need our collective advocacy.

Month #1 drop off.

Today, I was able to visit the Children’s Dyslexia Center in Bangor for a tour of the facility and to drop off The Driving Force April drive wishlist items.

It was a blessing speaking with Laurie, the center director. We are both over the moon for coming together and creating a partnership. We have many plans in the works. I can not wait to share each and every step along this journey.

One thing that stood out the most was our State map. Each pin represents a number of children served at the center over the years. I am so lucky to be involved with an organization that has the patience and kindness to work with children of all ages helping them to learn such vital skills.
