For 19 years, Bob Bradley has served on the front lines of disaster relief with The Salvation Army Modesto, responding to emergencies and bringing hope to communities in crisis.

With over 20 deployments, from Hurricane Sandy to the Chinese Camp fire, Bob has helped deliver critical support when it matters most. Through our Emergency Disaster Services canteen, The Salvation Army serves up to 1,200 hot meals a day, reaching areas like Planada, Merced, and Mariposa after devastating fires and disasters.

For families who have lost everything, a warm meal is more than food. It is comfort, care, and a reminder that they are not alone.

Stories like Bob’s show how disaster response, community support, and emergency services come together to bring real impact across Modesto and surrounding areas.

Shane first came to The Salvation Army Modesto Food Warehouse to give back to a community in need and he never stopped. What started as a desire to help others has grown into something more. A place of connection, faith, and friendship.

“This is more than just a place to get food. It’s a place where we can talk about Jesus, serve others, and build real relationships.”

Meet Mario Lucio. What started as a visit for help turned into nearly a year of giving back, supporting families, strengthening the community, and proving how powerful one “yes” can be.

“Helping people feels better than staying home. Come on down!”

This is what it looks like when someone steps in and stays.

If you’ve been thinking about volunteering in Modesto, this is your sign!

What keeps someone showing up to serve others for 6 years straight? For Eddy Elmore, it’s simple: faith, purpose, and the joy of giving back.

From serving at food pantries to supporting our shelter kitchen, Red Shield Community Center events, and even stepping up during emergencies with EDS, Eddy has been a constant presence across so many of our programs. His journey started at Moses Encampment and led him to The Salvation Army, where he found not just a place to serve, but a deeper calling to pay it forward.

“There’s always going to be a need out there.”

Eddy reminds us that volunteering isn’t just about helping others, it’s about discovering something meaningful within yourself.

Thinking about volunteering? Take it from Eddy: just start. You might find the inner happiness you didn’t know you were looking for.
