Citizens Apprehend Robbery Suspect
Modesto, CA- Monday, October 21, 2019, at approximately 9:45pm, MPD received calls that a man with a gun had entered the Tap Room at Sylvan Avenue and Claus Road and fired what turned out to be a pellet gun towards the ceiling. At that time, patrons from the Tap Room tackled the subject and detained him until MPD arrived and took the subject into custody.
We learned that the suspect, 18-year-old Justyn Wesson of Modesto, had gone on a robbery spree in the shopping center located in the 3900 block of Sylvan. Wesson had completed three robberies while covering his face and brandishing the pellet gun. Wesson had robbed The Village Wine & Market, Taqueria Carolina and the AM/PM Arco gas station of an undisclosed amount of money prior to entering the Tap Room.
We would like to say a special thank you to U.S. Army Lieutenant (retired) Derek Hudson, (pictured on the left) and off duty Modesto Fire Fighter, John Walker (pictured on the right) for taking the lead and stepping in to detain Wesson, undoubtedly stopping the crime spree Wesson began.
Hudson and Walker were thanked for their quick action and were given the MPD Citizen Recognition coin by our officers. These men are a great example of citizens taking action to protect themselves and their community while being in the right place at the right time.
Justyn Wesson was booked into the Stanislaus County Jail for three counts of robbery and one attempted robbery charge. Wesson’s booking photo is not currently available.
