Imagine having to choose between a roof over your head and the only companion who has never left you. That’s the reality for many people experiencing homelessness — people like Daniel and his dog, Rafi.
I’m homeless, but not because I want to be — every place that offers me a bed tells me, "You can’t bring your dog.”
My name is Daniel, and Rafi has been with me long before I lost my home. I found him scared and limping behind an empty building, and he’s been my family ever since. When my job disappeared and rent went up, I had nowhere left to go. I tried shelter after shelter. Some said no because of insurance. Some said no because of space. One offered me a bed — if Rafi went to a kennel across town. I knew he wouldn’t handle being separated. So I stayed with him.
We share one blanket. We share whatever food we can find. At night, we protect each other. People think I chose this life. But really — I chose the only soul who never left me.
Stories like this aren’t isolated. In cities across the country, people are choosing the streets rather than abandon the companions who give them comfort and love. In San Antonio, a 19‑year‑old named Samuel refused a shelter bed because they would not allow his dog Mordex to stay with him, saying of his dog, “He’s my son.” Community members rallied to support them after his story was shared online.
What does this say about us as a society?
How can we ensure that no one has to choose between a roof over their head and the companion who keeps them going? How can we build systems that value connection, compassion, and dignity — for both people and the animals they love?
Let’s talk about solutions:
• More pet‑friendly shelters
• Community spaces that support people and pets together
• Policies that address why people lose housing in the first place
• Support networks that help people stay in homes with their companions
No one should be alone — not in a bed, not on the street, and certainly not without the one they love. ❤️
