Remember the babies from last year? This is Sugar now, the one whose face I could never photograph. She's sassy and has a case of the tortitude the size of Alaska, but she decided I'm her human and demands snuggles on her schedule.

Chili is still the most calm and lazy, pear-shaped one-year-old I have ever seen. The only things that get her going is a laser pointer or when a moth gets in the house 🤣

Roadie has officially been introduced to Miles, and even though they are a couple weeks apart (and he is nearly twice her weight!) they are the best of friends. They've also both been introduced to Jack, our resident grandpa. Miles already has a pending home, while Roadie is still looking for hers.

Little Roadie gets her stitches out today, which means she'll be free-roaming the kitten room with Miles! Hopefully he won't beat her up too much, there's about two weeks age difference between them but he is twice her size. She eats just as much as he does, and has been packing the weight back on after a couple days of no appetite (vet suspected worms and she was treated on Wednesday).

Another update on Roadie:

Her swelling is completely gone (you can see her back left paw here) and she is putting full weight on her leg! She had stopped eating so we went to the vet again for a quick check, and she was given an anti-nausea injection, a 30-day topical flea/tick/worm treatment, and high-nutrient food. Vet said her leg is healing very well and estimates her age at 7 weeks which is younger than I like to have away from mama, but the circumstances of me finding her didn't leave me any choice in that matter.

Today I brought her out of her recovery tent for some time to stretch all of those little legs, and she showed her playful side 💖 She has an appointment set next week to get those stitches out, and then she can be fully released from her tent and join Miles in the kitten room.

Roadie update:

The swelling in her foot has gone down and she's putting weight on that leg! But, now she's decided to not eat. I bribed her with a slice of turkey lunchmeat last night before bed (thanks for the idea Ham Goblin), and she is drinking water on her own, but she wants nothing to do with milk replacer or wet kitten food.

Right now she's quietly snuggled in my lap watching the big kitties work out their pre-breakfast zoomies. She's a very sweet girl, and once we get through this latest hurdle she'll be back on her road to recovery.

In a strange twist of fate she might be Miles' littermate, based on where and when she was found, and the fact that they're acting like they know each other.

Cat Distribution System strikes again.

This morning while I was out doing gig work to support our little local rescue, I came across a sweet little tabby in the middle of the highway. It looked like she fell out of someone's car. Since she was alive and alert, of course I could not leave her behind. Off we went immediately to the vet.

Little girl is 6-8 weeks old, battered and bruised with a scraped up leg, banged up foot, and dislocated hip, but nothing broken! She'll spend a while in the kitten tent healing and then be available for adoption after a full recovery, shots, and spay.

I normally don't do this, but if you are able to help with her care please consider donating. This was an unexpected bill while we are already struggling. I thought we'd avoided kitten season this year with our TNR and baby-napping efforts last year. I was wrong.

Meet Miles, our latest foster. His mama is a semi-feral barn cat; daddy is unknown. This little guy hitchhiked not once, but TWICE to one of our staff members' main job. The first time was a fluke, and while we enjoyed babysitting he was returned to his farm at the end of the work day. The second time he arrived in that engine bay, we knew he needed to be rehomed and kept inside, and his mama's owner agreed; this was becoming a learned behavior and he likely wouldn't survive a third ride.

Miles' mama may be feral but he is NOT! He may be little but he is eating and drinking on his own, loves snuggles and play, and is figuring out the litter box. We'll hang onto him long enough to get him fully transitioned to indoor life, neutered and vaccinated (he's still a bit young per our vet), and socialized with the other cats, and then he'll be off to his new home. Single kittens are always easier to re-home than pairs/multiples, and we have a list of about a half dozen prospects.

While looking through baby pics, I realized I missed an important update!

Cygnus is now inside and has been since the cold season. I had tried to catch him back in September when he was still a relatively little guy, and he told me NO in no uncertain terms. After bribing him with canned food he changed his mind 🤣 He adapted quite well to being indoors and is very social with humans, and even plays with his little sisters fairly often.

Misty ended up NOT being pregnant (lucky for us!) and we've pinpointed her skin condition as a flea allergy so she is on a monthly flea drop treatment, her sores have cleared up and her hair has grown back. She is also older than I originally thought, but not elderly. She doesn't get along well with the others and has a forever home pending; a friend of mine is getting her own place and wants a calm cat, and Misty absolutely LOVES her!

Bug has bonded with one of our staff and is going to be another foster fail, but that's ok. She gets along well with our little colony of resident rescues.

I never did manage to catch Mama. There was a hawk hanging around in the neighborhood, and she and her last litter went into hiding after it got the neighbor's outdoor cat. She still comes around sparingly for snacks, and I believe she's holed up in an abandoned house a couple blocks away. I haven't given up on her (the ultimate goal with her is TNR for population control), but I don't want to separate her from another litter she may be nursing since she was saggy the last time I saw her.

A successful rehoming is always bittersweet. Merry and Pepper, we will miss you but you're going to such a good place. The best part? You stayed together!
