It’s National Parks Week, and we’re celebrating with a week of records from the Archives! 🏞️ Let’s start with this look at the “Golden Circle.”

In 1961, Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall envisioned a network of parks and monuments across Utah, Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico. Although the “Golden Circle” was never realized as a single network or official designation, parts of Udall’s vision did become reality. Just three years later, Canyonlands National Park was established at the heart of the proposed circle.

On the second day of their southern Utah tour, Stewart Udall and Orville Freeman took in the views from Dead Horse Point. 🌄

In July 1961, the Secretary of the Interior and Secretary of Agriculture were leading a group of about 30 officials and newsmen on a five-day tour of southeastern Utah. The trip included a 100-mile journey down the Colorado River as the group explored the region and considered its potential for a new national park.

At Dead Horse Point, Udall and his wife were photographed with National Park Service Ranger Wilson E. Bates before continuing their tour of southern Utah.

By comparing the Fremont Piling figurines with matching period pictographs, we use AI to piece together a simple, clear visual of the people who inhabited Utah and the surrounding region for nearly a millennium.
History Moab is currently tracing the Fremont culture, combining archaeology, anthropology, linguistics, geology, and ethnobotany. to uncover the history and solve remaining mysteries of this fascinating era.

History Moab stands with Bears Ears, tribal members, leaders and supports the protection of sacred places. Historically, the United States has ripped land away from native peoples for many reasons, mostly for money. The government has a long history of lying and deceiving people, this isn't about putting public lands in public hands; it's about being able to sell off the land to the highest bidders for oil, minerals and probably data centers.
History Moab isn't an organization that quickly gets involved in politics and maintains a neutral stance because we are here to educate people about history. However, recent decisions from the Trump administration and Utah officials have put history at risk. Bears Ears contains the highest concentration of over 100,000 archeological sites dating back to the paleo clovis period. Many tribes, people and cultures have found this place to be sacred for thousands of years.
Please, fight for historic preservation. Keep native lands in native hands.
