Great Pyrenees Rescue, Montana

Great Pyrenees Rescue, Montana 501(c)(3) rescue saving Great Pyrenees and Pyr mixes across Montana and PNW. Volunteer-run, with a kennel tech providing daily care at our Missoula facility.
(3)

We help abandoned pyrs find loving homes. Fees: Puppies $400, Adults $275, Seniors $100. We operate under the guidance and umbrella of National Great Pyrenees Rescue, a 501C3 non-profit organization and in 2023 became a 501C3 ourselves. There is an adoption fee on the dogs that come through our organization - even though we are all volunteers and do not receive pay, we have expenses for the dogs -

vet bills, transport is not always free, sometimes we provide feed for foster homes, even printer ink - but we keep everything to a minimum, including our adoption fees. Our "standard" fee is $275, it may be less for a dog who will require meds or is significantly older, would be more for a puppy, usually $400, etc. We do require adequate fencing - yes, these dogs like to roam - and that is the point of the fencing requirement.

💙 Cody Is Still Waiting for His Forever Home! 🐾

Just look at those blue eyes! 👀💙

Cody is a 2-year, 10-month-old Great Pyrenees/Husky mix, weighing around 90–100 lbs, and he’s one goofy, lovable boy.

After everything Cody has been through, including losing his home in a fire and spending the past year moving from place to place, we’re really hoping his next move is the one that sticks. 🤍

Cody is:
🐾 Recently neutered
💉 Up to date on vaccines
🏡 Housebroken
🚶‍♂️ Excellent on leash
👧 Wonderful with kids
❤️ Friendly with people
🐕 Fantastic with female dogs
🐶 Selective with male dogs
🐱 No cats — he will chase them

Cody LOVES being outside and takes his job as neighborhood supervisor very seriously. 😂 He enjoys patrolling, keeping watch, and finding the perfect spot to survey his surroundings.

He’s also just a big silly goober who loves his people.

🏡 For Cody’s forever home:
He needs secure fencing and has done well with a 5-foot fence.

Cody has had enough uncertainty in his life.

He deserves a home where he knows he’s staying. ❤️

Could you be the family that finally gives Cody his forever?

Please share Cody! Those blue eyes might just belong to someone’s missing piece. 💙🐾

🧩🐾 Enrichment Makes a BIG Difference! 🐾🧩

One of our favorite things to see lately? Happy, busy dogs! 🥹❤️

We’ve added an enrichment program for our rescue dogs, and they are absolutely LOVING it. From sniffing and searching to working for treats and figuring out new challenges, enrichment gives our dogs something to think about, explore, and enjoy while they’re waiting for their forever homes.

And we’ve seen such a difference in them! 🐾

A dog doesn’t just need food, water, and a clean kennel. They need mental stimulation, choices, and things that make their day exciting. Especially when they’re spending time in a rescue environment.

A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who has donated enrichment toys, treats, puzzles, food items, and other supplies to help make this program possible. 🤍

And a very special thank you to Kim, who works behind the scenes preparing enrichment for our dogs every single day. ❤️

It’s a lot of work, but seeing the dogs get excited when enrichment arrives makes it completely worth it.

Happy dogs make for better rescue dogs—and we’re so grateful you help us give them more than just a place to wait. You help us give them things to LOOK FORWARD TO. 🥹🐾

Keep those enrichment donations coming… apparently our dogs have developed some pretty high expectations. 😂🧩🐶

❤️ MEET JAMIE!

Jamie is a 6-year-old, approximately 200-lb boy who is ready to make his way from Utah to Missoula! 🐾

There is one VERY important thing to know about this transport:

⚠️ Jamie has a difficult time getting in and out of vehicles.

Because of this, THE MORE LEGS WE CAN GET, THE BETTER! ❤️

We would love to minimize the number of times Jamie has to get in and out of a vehicle. If you are able to take multiple consecutive legs, that would be especially helpful!

That being said, EVERY LEG HELPS! Even one short leg makes a difference and gets Jamie closer to Missoula. 🥰

🥜 Peanut butter treats may help encourage him into the vehicle.
🚗 Hatchback access is preferred/needed.
📍 Please pull up to the curb for loading and unloading.
⏳ Please allow extra time and patience for Jamie to get settled.

🙏 THE MORE LEGS, THE BETTER!

If you can take multiple consecutive legs, that would be AMAZING for Jamie! ❤️

But if you can only take one leg, that is still a HUGE help.

Let’s work together to make this trip as easy, safe, and stress-free as possible for this big boy. 🐾❤️

🦁 Meet Nala! 🦁

This girl may weigh 190 lbs, but don’t let that size fool you—Nala is a HUGE sweetheart. ❤️

Since arriving from California with her brother Simba, we’ve been learning more and more about who Nala is, and she continues to impress us.

Nala is 5 years old, spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped, and she absolutely loves being outside. Give her some room and she’ll happily make herself a cozy wood-chip nest and settle in. 😂

We recently tested Nala with goats, ducks, geese, cattle, and horses, and she did wonderfully with all of them! 🐐🦆🐴🐄

We don’t know if Nala has ever actually lived with livestock before, so we aren’t going to call her a trained LGD. But her temperament around the animals has been incredible.

Even when our protective goose mama came over to defend her babies, Nala handled it like an absolute champ. 😂

Nala is:
❤️ A total lovebug
🐾 Sweet and easygoing
🐐 Wonderful with livestock we’ve tested her with
🐱 Good with cats
🌳 Loves being outdoors
🦁 A giant girl with an even bigger heart

If you’re looking for a massive, sweet companion who could potentially have a future as a guardian with the right guidance, Nala might be your girl.

We do believe that if she is going to work as an LGD, she’ll need guidance and a proper transition into that role rather than simply being turned loose with livestock.

Big girl. Big heart. Sweet as can be. 🤍🐾

🧬🐾 DAISY’S PUPPIES HAVE DNA RESULTS! 🐾🧬

We knew Daisy’s puppies looked like Great Pyrenees mixes, but their DNA test says these little nuggets are a mix of EIGHT different breeds! 🤯

The top five are:

🐾 33% Newfoundland
🐾 22% Great Pyrenees
🐾 16% Saint Bernard
🐾 16% Caucasian Shepherd Dog
🐾 4% German Shepherd Dog

And that’s only the top five! There are three more breeds hiding in the remaining 9% of their DNA. 👀

So apparently Daisy’s puppies aren’t just Pyr/Karakachan mixes like we originally suspected… they’re basically a giant-breed cocktail! 😂

They’re still growing and developing, so we’re excited to see how their looks and personalities change as they get older. DNA testing can give us some really fun insight, but their individual personalities will still be something we discover as they grow. ❤️

We can’t wait to share the full results and watch these little mutts grow into their giant selves! 🐶🧬

And honestly… 33% Newfoundland + 22% Pyr + 16% Saint Bernard + 16% Caucasian Shepherd?!

Yeah. These puppies are going to be BIG. 😂😂

⭐ Help Us Give Star a Second Chance ⭐

This is Star.

Our incredible rescue partners in Mexico found her abandoned on the streets, suffering from an infection so severe that she had been licking her own leg raw—down to the bone.

There was no way for her to heal on her own.

The same amazing team in Mexico who helped us save Obi-Wan didn’t hesitate. They got Star off the streets and straight to a veterinarian, where the heartbreaking decision was made that her front leg needed to be amputated.

But Star is still here. ❤️

And that’s what matters.

She is now recovering and, once she’s healthy enough, we will bring her to the United States to continue her journey toward the life she deserves.

We are hoping to raise $3,000 to help cover Star’s veterinary care, recovery, and—if she’s a good candidate—a prosthetic front leg that could give her even more mobility and comfort.

⭐ Every dollar helps Star.

$5.
$10.
$25.
$100.

It all adds up to giving this girl a chance.

We don’t know exactly what Star’s future will look like yet.

But we know this:

She survived being abandoned. She survived the infection. She survived losing her leg.

Now it’s our turn to make sure she gets the chance to live. ⭐❤️

Once Star is healthy enough, Montana is waiting for her. 🏔️🐾

Myth Monday!

❌ “Great Pyrenees Are Too Stubborn to Train.”

MYTH.

They’re absolutely trainable.

But they were bred to think independently, which means they often don’t have the same automatic desire to please that some working breeds do.

A Pyr may understand exactly what you’re asking…

…and still decide they have a better idea. 😂

Positive reinforcement, consistency, and patience go a LONG way.

🐾🏔️ Three More Pyrs Are SAFE! 🏔️🐾

Welcome to Montana, Moon, Suki & Marshmallow! 🤍

Today we welcomed THREE young Great Pyrenees into the rescue after they were at risk in California shelters.

🌙 Moon
🌸 Suki
🍡 Marshmallow

All three are around 2 years old, and today was a BIG day for them. They made the long journey from California to Montana and are finally safe with us. ❤️

They’re still figuring out this whole rescue thing and are just beginning to trust us, so we’re giving them the time and space they need to decompress and understand that they’re safe.

No big expectations.
No rushing.
Just patience, good food, soft voices, and plenty of time to learn that people can be trusted. 🥹

We’re excited to watch their personalities come out over the next few weeks and learn who these three really are.

The journey to Montana is complete. Their journey to forever starts now. 🐾🏔️

Welcome to Great Pyrenees Rescue Montana, Moon, Suki & Marshmallow. We’re so happy you’re here. 🤍🐾

🐾 LGD Myth: “A Great Pyrenees Can Live Anywhere.”

Technically?

Yes.

Should they?

Not always.

Great Pyrenees were bred to patrol acres, make independent decisions, and spend hours outdoors watching over what they love.

That doesn’t mean every Pyr needs a ranch.

But it does mean they need:
🏡 Space to move
🧠 Daily mental enrichment
🚶 Purpose and routine
❤️ A family that understands guardian breeds

A bored Pyr often becomes a creative Pyr.

Digging.
Escaping.
Barking.
Patrolling.

Those aren’t flaws.

They’re instincts looking for an outlet.
