With heavy snow comes a lot of discussion on supplemental wildlife feeding. Here’s some real-world evidence on how some pheasants are making it through this winter. This photo is of the crop of a hen pheasant found last week near a county road in Lyon County, probably killed by a car while gathering grit on the shoulder. The photo shows a wild bird with a generous amount of fat. Its crop is filled with seeds and grit and amazingly, green leafy material. The seeds are mostly beggar’s lice, which has about the same nutritional value as soybeans and is more easily digestible for birds. Note that there are no corn or soybeans in this bird although there are corn piles within a quarter mile of where the bird was found.
