Posting this picture primarily in hopes of Willow & Fox Homestead seeing it. I took this picture while doing a job at our local zoo. The job I was doing was a little intense, in the sense that it had a short window of time that it had to be done in. In other words, I shouldn't have been taking time to take pictures. But when I went to my work vehicle to get a tool I needed and saw these two staring at me, I was reminded of a post from the previous day in which she referenced "murder mittens" (I believe on emu, but not sure). I figured if emu have murder mittens, then ostrich may have fatality feet, or calamity claws, or some other body part that I don't want to make contact with. I found out a couple of days later that the giraffes that share this habitat with the birds are very curious. They seemed quite interested in what I was doing, as did the lions in whose enclosure I was working.

My daughter who is 26 just walked up and handed me this stuffy of Spuds McKenzie. She found it at a thrift store and had to do a lot of work to it to fix it up. Could be a collector’s item. It will forever live on my nightstand now. It’s a tribute to Sparky, who is showing me in the other photo that he wants out of his crate.

Hoping to post an unboxing video a little later this evening, after the recipient of this board and stand opens the box. Have to ask her if she’s comfortable with it. Stay tuned.

Just wrapped up this project a little while ago. Buffed the beeswax, mineral oil, and orange oil mix off the last treated edge and reattached the rubber feet on the bottom. Almost forgot to take a picture before wrapping it in shipping paper and boxing it up. I had planned to start making a stand for it tonight so it could be stored upright on the countertop to save space. Since our weekly small group meeting was canceled due to a snowstorm, I had some extra shop time. As for the stand, my spirit was willing, but my body wasn’t. With the late hour creeping up on my 8 PM bedtime, I decided to put that part off until tomorrow evening, Friday evening, or maybe Saturday, depending on how I feel after the 9-to-5 grind. I’ll probably be shoveling snow in the morning to get out for work, and again when I get home so we can park. Given that, I doubt I’ll touch the table saw before Saturday.

I don't think I'll ever NOT get excited when a cutting board build gets to this stage. This pic was taken right after spraying the bottom of the board with water, to raise the grain. After it's completely dry (a short period of waiting), I'll sand that surface one final time with 320 grit on the random orbital sander. After that, the final touches come together pretty quickly. Just have to glue on our logo badge, predrill for the rubber feet, and then apply two types of finishing oil.

Almost ready to cut the juice groove in this board. Having to modify the jig because it wasn’t designed with square boards in mind. I can never remember which direction to run the router around the perimeter of the board when I get to this step. If only I had it written down somewhere.

Current status of our current project. We usually only build one thing at a time. Previous photo of this board had lots of clamps obstructing the pattern. After sitting in clamps all night, I took them off this morning and then ran the workpiece through the drum sander to smooth both faces. Lots of sanding with the random orbit sander is in my near future. I spoke with the person who asked for this piece this morning at church, inquiring as to whether she actually plans to use this board to carve large cuts of meat. She said yes, and to go ahead and do a juice groove.

Upon getting this build to this point earlier today, I realized I may be a big kid who still likes to play with blocks. That's because this is currently 64 cubes that are 1 7/8" x 1 7/8" (x 2" tall, so not officially cubes). After this photo was taken, I put a band clamp around it and then used an F clamp to squeeze each row and each column together, which closed the small gaps that are visible in this photo. Making plans to glue this up in the next few days, then run it through the drum sander to get both faces completely flat. Final sanding of all surfaces is with a 5" RO sander, up to 320 grit. Outer dimensions are 15" x 15", and it should end up around 1 7/8" thick. First time making this pattern, and first square board ever produced in our shop.

Finally finished this piece, shortly before this video was shot. Apologies to anyone who is tired of seeing it. This will be the final post about it. Thanks for your interest. Have a blessed Christmas season.
