PRO TIP❗

If you ever find yourself needing help on California state highways, keep an eye out for the little white signs on the road’s shoulder—these are postmile markers and they’re super helpful in emergencies!

Here’s how to read them:

1) The top number (like 299) is the route number.
2) The letters show which county you’re in (for example, TRI means Trinity).
3) The numbers along the side (such as 51.00) tell you exactly where you are on the route in that county.

Knowing this is especially helpful in remote areas.

During storms, always assume downed lines are power lines, that they are live and extremely dangerous; stay at least 35 feet away, warn others, call 911, and never touch them or anything they contact, as electricity travels through the ground, wet objects, fences, and even trees. If a line falls on your car, stay inside and call for help; only exit by jumping clear with feet together if there's fire, then shuffle away without touching the car.
Key Safety Rules:
Assume All Lines Are Live: Never assume a downed line is safe, even if it's not sparking.
Stay Back: Keep at least 35 feet away from any fallen line and anything touching it (fences, trees, puddles).
Call for Help: Report downed lines immediately to 911 and your utility company.
Don't Touch: Never try to move a line or an object in contact with it (like tree limbs).
Beware of Ground Current: Electricity can travel through the ground, energizing the area around the line.
Stay Away from Vehicles: Don't drive over lines, and if a line hits your car, stay inside and call 911.
If There Is a Fire and You Must Exit a Car: Jump clear, keeping feet together, then shuffle away without touching the car.
Why it's so dangerous:
Wet Conditions: Wet wood, cloth, and even wet ground conduct electricity effectively.
Hidden Hazards: Lines can be hidden by debris or branches.
Re-energization: A "dead" line can suddenly become live during restoration efforts.
