Minster Boy Scouts

Minster Boy Scouts Where the future leaders of our community, nation, and world are formed. Scouting in Minster started shortly after scouting was started in 1910.

Little is known about the original troop from Minster except that they met in a clubhouse behind the Utz home on North Roman Avenue (currently Lincoln Drive). However, we do know that they frequently camped out on an unknown island on Lake Loramie. They all enjoyed hunting rabbits and would prepare them during their meetings in their small clubhouse. Mary (Utz) Kramer, the sister of 2 of the origi

nal scouts, was often asked to join them in feasting on their food. Their recreation during the winter involved ice skating up and down the canal between Minster and New Bremen, where they would stop to Visit Fuzzy Combs, the owner of the ice house in New Bremen at the time. Troop 44, however, was chartered in 1945 under the leadership of our first Scoutmaster, Robert (Whitie) Bernhold. He was helped by many from our town in starting the troop. Our first Eagle Scout was given his award in 1948. Since then, over 60 more Eagle Scout awards have been awarded to Troop 44 members including over 25 since the year 2000. We currently have around 45 members registered with the hope of growing more within the next couple of years. To get involved with our Boy Scout Troop, contact us at the email address at the bottom of this page. We hope to see you at our next meeting!

The Buckeye Trail has a long history with Scouts (formerly known as Boy Scouts) in Ohio, whether it's guiding hikes or involving them in trail projects and Eagle Scout projects. Pictured is a guided hike in Fairborn on September 23, 1973.

If your Scout Troop is interested in collaborating with the Buckeye Trail Association, you can reach out to our scouting liaison at [email protected].

We also have a Girl Scout liaison (and BTA Trustee), Marianne Duvendack. You can reach her at [email protected].

From Kevin Meyer - FB has made some changes that make managing this particular page pretty tough recently so we started fresh with a new FB page for everyone to keep up with troop's activities. I encourage everyone who follows this page to check out and follow Minster Boy Scouts (Troop 44) Community Group for the latest news and photos. We will work on migrating the photos from this page over to that new one as well. Thanks!

What a fantastic weekend! We took 20 boys down to Louisville, KY and Mammoth Caves and packed in a ton of activities. Friday night was "Scout Night" at the Louisville Bats AAA baseball game. We caught the last few innings of the game (darn traffic) and we got to camp overnight in the outfield!

On Saturday we traveled farther south to Mammoth Caves and took a 4-hour cave tour. I think the highlight was seeing the "Frozen Niagra" inside the cave. We camped in the National Park near the Mammoth Cave Visitor's Center Saturday night and made lasgana in the dutch ovens for dinner (a first for us and it was delicious!).

On Sunday we packed up camp and headed back through Louisville where we attended church service and tour the Louisville Slugger factory before heading back to Minster.

The boys were awesome, we got a ton of complements everywhere we went and seeing all of the scouts in uniform all weekend was really cool. A huge THANK YOU goes out to Jim Huwer and Ryan Bohman for the hours of planning, prep and enduring the long drives in the hot scout van.

On to Summer Camp in June!

Polar Bear Campout - The below zero wind-chill put a bit of a damper on our plans to camp this weekend, but we still made it out to the woods on Sunday. We got some of the recent Webelo cross-overs started on some advancement, explored one of our favorite local woods and made some delicious potato soup and hot chocolate over the fire. We're looking forward to a great year as our troop nearly doubled in size in the recent weeks!
