Paddles Up!
Itâs Dragon Boat Festival Time
MINOCQUA â When the paddlers have fire in their bellies and are smoking the competition, you know itâs Dragon Boat Festival time in Minocqua. The annual event will again be held at Torpy Park in downtown Minocqua on Saturday, Aug. 16.
Spectator admission is free. A shuttle bus will run continuously from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. from the Professional Plaza at the intersection of Hwy. 51/Hwy. 70W (by Home Medical) to and from Torpy Park. The bus ride is also free.
The 8:30 a.m. opening ceremony, called Awakening of the Dragon, is conducted âto cleanse the area of competition, to bless the competitors and their boats, and to charge the boats and their crews with the Spirit of the Dragon and the Goddess of the Sea.â
Starting at 9 a.m. teams (3 each) will race in subsequent heats on Lake Minocqua. Guided by a steersperson and to the beat of a drum, teams paddle 300 meters from east to west, finishing in front of Torpy Parkâs swimming beach in an intense display of strength and teamwork. The race finale comes at 3 p.m. when the top six teams race 2,000 meters in non-stop, hard-core paddling.
This is a family event so bring the young ones. The cultural themed interactive activities in the childrenâs tent will delight the âdragonlings. Visitors can enjoy food and soft drinks (beer and wine are also available) while taking in a performance on the main stage or watching paddlers race.
Awards will be presented for race winners and spirit, including best-dressed drummer, most spirited team, wisest dragon, and fundraising champion. This year the festival is supporting the Aspirus Tick-Borne Illness Center Compassionate Care Appeal. The Compassionate Care Appeal is dedicated to ensuring that every patient receives the care they require, irrespective of their ability to pay.
