Minnesota PowerHockey League (MPHL)

Minnesota PowerHockey League (MPHL) The Minnesota PowerHockey League (MPHL) is a non-profit 501 (C) 3 corporation, and member of Disabled Sports USA. Paul metropolitan area in April 1997.

The Minnesota PowerHockey League (MPHL) established the first organized PowerHockey league located in the Minneapolis/St. Over 32 players (4 teams) competed in a 9 game regular season. The season finished with all four teams competing in the playoffs. This sport is ideal for male and female participants, requiring the use of an electric wheelchair. Players do not need assistance from able-bodied p

ersons during the play of the game. The sport means total independence and equality. It is hard to think of any other team sport in which a person in an electric wheelchair can participate without a great deal of assistance from able-bodied persons. PowerHockey rules follow the basic rules found in any hockey league around the country. Off-sides and penalties are a routine call during the game. Players can serve from 2 to 5 minute penalties for such things as interference, delay of game, holding, high sticking and roughing. Unlike other hockey leagues, PowerHockey requires a few adaptations to allow everyone to participate on an equal level. Some adaptations include using hockey sticks made from light weight plastic materials and a light weight plastic ball is substituted for the puck. PowerHockey provides the perfect opportunity for a disabled person to be involved in an organized team sport. If a participant can not slap the ball hard enough, the momentum of the wheelchair will provide the physical strength needed to score the game winning goal! You do not need a formal league to start playing on a local or even international level. It only takes 6-10 people to form a team. If you practice whenever possible, who knows who you will be playing against in the future.

Hi Everyone:

We just wanted to send out a quick message to all of our golf players and sponsors about this summer’s annual golf tournament fundraiser. Due to COVID-19, we have decided to skip this year’s event as there are too many uncertainties for golfers and sponsors alike. Although we believe things will be much better by late July we just can’t risk exposing any of our players in large groups until a vaccine is available.

We hope to return to golf as usual next summer and we appreciate your understanding.

Thanks for all your support!

Today, it is with great honor but also heavy hearts that we are announcing the creation of the Luke Pedersen 20 Achievement Award in memory of Luke Pedersen one of the creator’s and co-founders of the United States Electric Wheelchair Hockey Association (1996), the Minnesota PowerHockey League (1997), and the PowerHockey Cup (2001) which continues to this day with Toronto hosting the next event in July 2020!

The LP20 Achievement Award will be presented annually to an individual who has played a vital role in the success and development of the Minnesota PowerHockey League.

Two past individuals of great importance to the league were automatically added upon creation of this award, both having passed to early!

The first is James Earl Billups. Known to every as Earl. He served in the early years of the Minnesota PowerHockey League in multiple roles; caregiver, driver, motivator, volunteer referee and statistician, coach, preacher, and friend to many.

Secondly, Dave Wimmergren, also known as SuperDave. Dave also served multiple roles as well; father, caregiver, equipment expert, wheelchair repairman, coach, and post-game party planner!

Both were lost to soon but are forever remembered as having a huge impact on the Minnesota PowerHockey League, especially for the Minnesota Stars and Minnesota Saints traveling teams!

For this, the inaugural year for the LP20 Achievement Award, we want to add Josh Holler, one of our league’s important long-time supporters and developers. Also serving multiple functions over the years; 4-time PowerHockey Cup champion coach, fundraiser, and caregiver since the PowerHockey World Cup in 2001.

Thank you, Josh for all your hard work and dedication!
