When someone is diagnosed with cancer, one of the first things they hear is a stage number.

But what does that number actually mean?

Here’s what cancer staging really tells you:

Staging describes how far cancer has grown or spread in the body at the time of diagnosis. Most solid tumor cancers are classified using a Stage I–IV system, aligned with NCCN and AJCC guidelines.

Stage I — The cancer is small and localized. It hasn’t spread to nearby lymph nodes or other organs. Treatment is often highly effective at this point.

Stage II — The tumor has grown larger or may have spread to nearby lymph nodes, but remains regional. Treatment is still focused and often curative in intent.

Stage III — The cancer has spread more extensively to lymph nodes or nearby tissues. Treatment often involves a combination of approaches — surgery, radiation, systemic therapy.

Stage IV — The cancer has spread (metastasized) to distant organs. This stage shifts the treatment goal, as the cancer is not curable at this stage — but it does not mean treatment stops.
