Ask a single mother what she is watching this fall, and she will not say the midterms.

She will say October because this month is when states will be asked to do more with less, and families will be left to absorb the difference.

Now, states are responsible for 75% of the cost of administering SNAP, up from the half they have paid since the program began.

This move will put an even greater burden on families already struggling to put food on the table. It means moms going to bed hungry so their children can eat.

Starting today, states will pay 75% of the administrative expenses for SNAP. For decades, states and the federal government have spilt these costs 50/50.

Why does this matter?

States will need to pay billions more over the coming years to keep SNAP operating. Some will meet the need; others may scale back or completely withdraw from SNAP.

In our March Urban Institute survey of single moms, 85% said they experienced food insecurity in the past year.

We need to be expanding SNAP, not shrinking it.

SNAP ensures millions of single mothers and their children don't go hungry. This shouldn't be political.

Yet, student parents and non-parenting students have similar GPAs on average — with parents adding child care and work to their school obligations, often with limited supports.

We need policies and institutional support that help student parents succeed in school.
