Today, September 18, marks eight years since we lost our beloved Wendy Martinez.

While this day will always carry deep meaning for her family and everyone who knew Wendy, it is also a reminder that her legacy continues to move forward through partnerships in leadership, technology, and running.

We are grateful to share several meaningful updates:

FiscalNote recently completed its “Move a Mile for Wendy” challenge, with 60 FiscalNoters participating in Wendy’s honor. FiscalNote also made a generous $3,000 contribution to support Wendy’s legacy and its mission. We are incredibly grateful for their commitment to remembering Wendy through service and community impact.

We are also excited to be working with Latinas in Tech D.C. on the development of “The Wendy Martinez Legacy Scholarship for Women in Tech.” The proposed 2027 program will support women in technology, including early-career professionals, and women transitioning into the technology field. We are especially proud that Latinas in Tech D.C. has recognized Wendy as its Posthumous Founder Emerita, honoring her vision to create space for Latinas to connect, grow, and support each other in this community. https://latinasintech.org/chapter/washington-dc

And this January, Keith Fernandez and Juan Carlos Martinez will represent Team Wendy by completing a half marathon during Disney Marathon Weekend. Our fundraising campaign will begin in October to help support TWMLP’s mission and expand its impact: advancing young Latino professionals in leadership, empowering women in technology, and promoting safety advocacy through running.

Eight years later, Wendy is still inspiring people to lead, serve, run, and create opportunities for others.

We are carrying her legacy forward in every opportunity created, every mile run, and every life touched in her name.

Today, we had the privilege of sharing our film, “These Miles Are For You,” a story that reflects the heart of the Wendy Martinez Legacy Project.

Through every mile, every partnership, and every act of service, we remain committed to empowering the next generation of leaders, strengthening meaningful relationships, and promoting safer communities.

This film honors Wendy’s legacy and those who inspire us to keep moving forward with purpose, courage, and compassion. It is a reminder that every step we take can create opportunities, build connections, and make a lasting impact on the lives of others.

Happy 43rd heavenly birthday Wendy! 🎊🎂✨🎉

She had a rare kind of brilliance— one that didn’t demand attention, yet filled every room it entered. She had the gift of making people feel seen, valued, and special, even in the midst of a crowd. Her warmth lingered long after conversations ended, and her presence left a mark that time has not erased.

We’ll never know exactly how her life would have unfolded, but we are certain of this: Wendy would be still caring, loving, learning, coaching, dreaming, laughing, supporting her community and sharing exciting stories over and over; especially with her kids - the ones she dreamed of having.

Her sudden loss still hurts. That ache remains. But so does her impact. Wendy’s spirit continues to move through our lives, our communities, and this foundation—inspiring us and reminding us why love and purpose matter.

In her honor, we remain committed to raising awareness, strengthening communities, and helping shape the next generation into humble, compassionate and honorable leaders. This is her legacy, alive and growing.

You are deeply loved, endlessly missed, and forever remembered. 🤍

“Next Gen, Buddy Strong” 💛👟
Let’s teach the next generation to adopt a proactive approach to running by learning to run with a buddy, recognizing that preparedness supersedes bravery. Safety Tip: Apply the 3-Point Buddy Check →
1) Plan the route and estimated time of arrival
2) Increase visibility with reflective or light gear and identification, and 3) Maintain open communication lines via phone and regular check-ins. Please identify your running buddy and provide your meeting location.

Congratulations, Carlos Espejo!

This past weekend, Carlos crossed the finish line of his first-ever marathon — running in honor of Wendy Martinez and everything she stood for: strength, love, and fearless determination.

Because of the incredible generosity of our donors, Carlos proudly represented the Wendy Martinez Legacy Project from head to toe in all official merch — a symbol of our community’s unity and purpose.
