In today's Star Tribune: Minnesota Youth Council Representative Aanya Mohta on the importance of student voice on school boards.

"The value of student participation extends beyond representation itself. School boards make better decisions when they have better information. They routinely make decisions about attendance policies, graduation requirements, technology use and extracurricular opportunities. Students experience the effects of those decisions every day, often long before concerns appear in board reports. They notice unintended consequences, identify practical challenges and offer real-time feedback that no spreadsheet or survey can fully capture. A student representative cannot replace the expertise of educators, parents or elected board members, but they bring a perspective nobody else in the room has."

About 235 of Minnesota’s 331 school districts still do not include a student representative on their school board. That needs to change, Aanya Mohta writes.

"The staff of Minnesota Alliance With Youth is thrilled to announce Kate Suchomel as our new Executive Director!

We have all been lucky to work with Kate in her various roles at the Alliance for 12 years, and we have especially appreciated her support and leadership as Interim Executive Director in recent months. In addition to having an unmatched understanding of our programs, values, and strategy, Kate keeps youth voice and a passion for our mission at the center of all she does.

Kate is a trusted and admired part of our team, and staff have expressed both comfort and confidence in her ability to guide our organization through future years. Please join us in congratulating Kate on her new role and the Alliance on a new Executive Director!" -the team at Minnesota Alliance With Youth

A must-read Minnesota Women's Press commentary from Minnesota Youth Council Representative Ava on the ongoing issue of chronic student absenteeism.

"When students stop showing up to school, we should focus on more than simply attendance. I believe the education system must recognize the core of the issue is engagement. To improve student attendance, we need to stop asking how to get students into classrooms and start working to create classrooms they want to be in."

My Minnesota Youth Council committee created a survey that was completed by 227 high schoolers in Minneapolis, mostly from Washburn and Edison High Schools. The results are telling: students are missing school because the education system is not meeting their needs.
