Walk With a Bag Initiative

Walk With a Bag Initiative The Walk With a Bag Initiative is an effort towards keeping communities clean. There are lots of reasons that we walk, and lots of trash we see when we do.

Next time you go for a walk bring a bag and pick up the trash that you can!

Day 22 was at another frisbee golf course, Hansen Park in New Brighton.

I didn't find anything super interesting other than a few tennis balls that got distributed to the dogs that were out on walks (with their owners' permission). However, the actual interesting part of the day was seeing the controlled burn areas in the park! I took a few pics to share, but it was really cool to walk through a freshly charred landscape. Unfortunately the fire wasn't hot enough to ashify the plastics, but it did make them very easy to see/reach. Most of what I collected came from the burn areas.

Two collections for day 21! One was at the Bethel University frisbee golf course and the other was on an evening canoe paddle around Turtle Lake.

Neither outing was about large scale removal, more so collecting whatever litter crossed my path while I went about my day. I collected what I could while I was there and next time I'll be able to collect more, eventually, I'll clean an entire lake/course/park/neighborhood.

Also, friendly reminder that Earth Day is coming up on Wednesday! Look up what events are happening in your area or even just take your family for a walk around your neighborhood!

It's the truth! Another truth is that if you can carry a can/cup/bottle while it's full, you can carry it while it's empty. Don't be the lazy person that can't be trusted with an empty McDonalds cup.

However, it was a great success! It was supposed to be a quick grab and fill of a shopping bag in a tree and then I was going to clean an intersection that is LOADED with trash. What actually happened was that I started with the tree bag and then Kept. Finding. More. Bags. Enough that I decided to just walk till I was either out of bags or out of time! I ran out of time. I'm glad I got to extend the walk too because it was the perfect, drizzly, 40 F, spring day.

At the end of it I had 11 full bags that I found, 1 that I brought, most of a snow shovel, some other large debris, and about 3 miles of cleaned roadways/sidewalks!

A bag is a terrible thing to waste.

This one has been hanging on a tree for a few days and I simply couldn't look at it any more. Pulled over on my way home from the real day 16 walk, took it down, filled it with litter in 10 minutes, and carried on my way.

Day 16 was all about Island Lake Park. I only had three bags left in my truck but luckily I found another one in the bushes.

If you ever do a litter walk I'd love to hear about it! Please don't hesitate to tag me if you post your walk results!

This is what it's all about! Taking your kid to a park on a beautiful day and teaching them how to contribute to their community. There's thousands of reasons to walk with a bag, family and community are two of the best ones!

City Park, Spooner WI
A place my daughter and countless other kids come to play and have birthday parties should always be kept clean. It usually isn't. There is a dumpster which is not locked and atleast 4 garbage cans around the park, trails, baseball fields, and outdoor hockey rink here. The amount of cigarette butts, alcoholic beverages, shattered plexiglass everywhere from the rink, etc is unacceptable.
I will not stand for garbage. I will stand for the safety of our kids and our Earth. 🌎

Day 15 is done along with both sides of 1 mile of road! this mile has been bugging me since I started this, it took 4 walks, but we finally got it done! I'm tempted embrace Minnesotan passive-aggressiveness and go drop the old signs off on their office doorsteps...

I took the uncleaned route there and the cleaned route back. In the second pic the left bag is a week's worth of buildup from a fifth of a mile on a busy road, the right bag is all the legacy waste from who knows when along the same stretch. 20 pounds compared to less than 1. This exemplifies the idea of walking with a bag. I'm crazy and have a lot of free time, so I can handle the legacy waste, but after that all it takes is one single neighbor to keep more litter from accumulating!

Also, the duck we found on Easter found a home! He's been my copilot for about a week, but I finally spotted a ducked up Jeep for him.

Day 13 and 14 were from the same spot and were in the true spirit of walking with a bag. I was at a blacksmithing event for 8 hours both days this weekend, but I still found time to go for a quick walk! I took 15 minutes from my lunch break on both days and filled one bag each day from an empty lot next to the event location. 15 minutes and one shopping bag is really all it takes.

It was obvious from all the toys and baseballs that the neighbor hood kids used to lot for their games, but I still found sights like the second picture in the post.... If you can think of somewhere in your daily life that looks like that bush bring a bag and a glove to that spot today and make it better!
