Maycember

A term recently coined by many, especially those with school aged children.

Here is a reminder, especially to myself, no one is doing it all! And you shouldn’t feel like you have to! Life is messy and can be difficult. Don’t let the image of perfect get the best of you. Share the imperfections!

You can wrap a pretty bow on perfect photos and not share the hard. Or in this case the utter disorganization of things that do not have a home! Sharing the normal instead of perfection!

Here is our kitchen table. The end of the school year craziness, start of camping season and preparation for summer!

A basket for the camper, mail, the contents of Lucas’ cabinet at school, art projects, homemade flags, a globe, garage sale treatsures and a cat all grace my dining room table. And there is a lot more! It will all stay here for a while.

And that is ok.

No one is doing it all. And if they claim to be they are lying. Or they have a ton of help!

Looking through all my videos of Lucas, it’s no wonder he loves choir!! Dad still sings this to him every night too!

This kid, he is something special!

He may not be reading chapter books or solving multiplication problems. But he knows his people. He understands them and their emotions. Even if he cannot effectively communicate his own.

He knows by the tone of my voice if I’m struggling with a headache. And he’s the first to spot Little Brother’s quivering lip moments before he starts to cry. And best of all when his Dad stands up with a groan, without missing a beat he asks “getting old Daddy”?

He knows his people and I’m so lucky I’m one of them!

Growing up, we always went on family bike rides. Through our neighborhood, we’d weave along the road. The three of us following our Dad like a brood of geese and our Mom at the end making sure we’d stay in line.

As we grew older the rides would go longer and farther away. We had two county parks on either side of the city we lived in and our house centered in the middle. The trails were extensive and it was fun to ride on bridges over roads and tunnels under them. We’d prefer one over the other because a stop at the local gas station on the way back home for an ice cream treat was a must. My Dad has a sweet tooth just like his youngest grandson!

Lucas’ first bike ride was not pleasant. He was eighteen months old and screamed though the entire campground while riding in the trailer behind his Dad. We never tried it again. That trailer just collected dust in our garage. Little Brother never even experienced it.

One of the good things that came out of the year we all stayed home is Lucas learned to ride his bike. Even with training wheels on he was fast! We definitely had to wear our running shoes to keep up. Little Brother followed with his trike and they put on so many miles riding circles around our cul de sac.

This year we completed our first family bike ride where we all started and ended at the same time! My dream of continuing the tradition has happened!

I know many families like ours are unable to do these kinds of things.

And I see you!

I know the struggles are real. Often they are so hard to see. But I challenge you to find something that every one of you can do together!
It may not be perfect.
It may not be the same as others.

But that is ok!

I truly believe it will get better and you will feel more successful too!

When autism was said about my boy, I let go of a lot of dreams. Slowly, though, much more is happening that I never thought was possible!

Found this gem today! Thought it deserved a place here. Love his little voice! Visiting the duck pond is definitely still an activity at Grandpa’s house.

Everyday when I put my boys on the school bus, I’m thankful for those who support them. The educators, para educators, staff and bus drivers are incredible!

But days like today, Track and Field Day, I wonder how in the world they show up everyday?!? It certainly has to be a calling. I know I couldn’t do it!

For anyone who believes those who work in schools have an easy job I challenge you to go in a classroom for a few hours. See what they are up against!

Uff-dah (yes, very Minnesotan of me)

Keep trying! It may be in their own time but they will get there! And you will too! Seeing the joy my boy has on the baseball field is all that matters!!
