As the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence approches, I appreciate the history of how it all happened. July 4, 1776 is the history date we all learned in school. The Reality: Congress actually voted to approve the resolution for independence from Britain on July 2nd, adopted final text of the Declaration on July 4th (which was only signed by John Hancock and Charles Thomson that day so copies could be printed), and the formal, ceremonial signing of the parchment by the majority of the 56 delegates didn't occur until August 2, 1776! One of the only remaining original prints of the Declaration, from July 9, 1776, will be on display starting this July 4 at the ArtsWestchester Gallery in White Plains, NY !
