COULD SOLAR POWER HELP MORE NIGERIAN CHILDREN LEARN?

Nigeria's new $300 million renewable-energy fund could bring reliable electricity to more underserved communities. For a community literacy center, power can mean evening classes, safer facilities, charged learning devices and access to digital educational resources.

This creates an opportunity for renewable-energy companies to extend their social impact beyond electrification. A solar-powered literacy center can turn electricity into learning, confidence and opportunity.

EDUCATION IS RECEIVING LESS THAN 1 PERCENT OF EMERGENCY FUNDING

Education received only 0.8% of major UN emergency-fund allocations in 2026 - even as conflict, displacement and climate emergencies continue to disrupt children's learning.

When education disappears during a crisis, children lose more than lessons. They can also lose safety, stability and hope.

Community literacy programs can provide protected spaces, trusted adults and learning continuity when normal schooling is interrupted.

Should education be treated as lifesaving assistance in every humanitarian response?

DONORS WANT LITERACY PROGRAMS THAT CAN PROVE RESULTS

Nearly 90% of children in low-income countries cannot read a simple text by age ten.

New donor research identifies structured teaching and grouping children by their actual learning level as two of the most cost-effective responses.

This is why literacy support must go beyond distributing books. Children need trained tutors, appropriate instruction and regular assessment of their progress.

FAC is committed to building a measurable community-literacy model that helps children become confident readers.

Child Labour Is Stealing Education and Children's Futures

Thirty-seven young miners - many reportedly teenagers - died after being detained following illegal-mining raids in Minna.

This tragedy reveals a larger crisis: poverty and unsafe work continue to pull vulnerable children away from school and expose them to exploitation.

Literacy programs must look beyond attendance to understand why children are missing lessons. At Feed an African Child Inc, we believe education, nutrition and child protection must work together.

What would it take to keep every vulnerable child learning - and out of dangerous labour?

Another step toward better literacy outcomes.

Our Tutor & Coordinator Training was successfully held, preparing the FAC team for the new literacy session.

The training covered key areas including student enrollment, reading-level assessment, class placement, attendance, progress tracking, testing, documentation, and reporting.

We believe that meaningful impact starts with a well-prepared team. By equipping our tutors and coordinators with the right knowledge and procedures, we are better positioned to create a structured and effective learning experience for the children we serve.

A big thank you to Rufus J. Akinrinlola, Ph.D, mMBA, Founder of Feed an African Child Inc, and everyone who participated.

WHAT MAKES A LITERACY PROGRAM WORK AT SCALE?

Many literacy programs begin with promising ideas. Far fewer successfully expand while maintaining quality and measurable results.

The 2026 What Works Hub for Global Education Conference will examine how effective foundational-learning programs can be implemented at scale.

Africa-focused sessions will address:

1. Cost-effective teacher coaching in Namibia
2. Differentiated learning in Ghana
3. Literacy programming in Uganda
4. Teaching at the Right Level in Somalia
5. Structured teaching approaches in Ethiopia
6. Education evaluation in Ghana and Sierra Leone

These topics are highly relevant to community literacy organizations. Growth should not simply mean enrolling more children. It should mean reaching more children while preserving instructional quality, consistent tutor support and credible evidence of reading improvement.

At Feed an African Child Inc, we are learning, measuring and strengthening our approach as we work toward serving more underserved children.

Which factor is most important when expanding a literacy program: funding, tutor quality, community support or reliable data?

New Education Research Grants Available Across Africa

African researchers can now apply for school-leadership research grants of up to $35,000.

The African Centre for School Leadership is offering:

• Sixteen action-research grants of up to $15,000
• Seven comparative research grants of up to $35,000

Applications close September 30, 2026.

Strong leadership affects teacher performance, learning environments and children’s educational outcomes. Yet community learning centers and small literacy programs are often missing from education-leadership research.

Feed An African Child is interested in partnering with eligible Africa-based researchers who want to study tutor leadership, community engagement, literacy-center management or educational support for underserved Nigerian children.

The principal investigator must meet the funder’s academic requirements, but organizations like FAC could potentially contribute community experience or serve as implementation partners and research sites.

Know an eligible education researcher? Please share this opportunity or tag them below.
