The insects are throwing a party, and you're invited! 🪲🎼

Bring the family for a summer evening of discovery as we tune in to nature’s nighttime soundtrack. We'll kick things off with a fun introduction to the insects behind all that buzzing, chirping, and singing, then head outside to see who’s performing after dark.

Along the way, you'll learn how to recognize different insects by their songs, play nature detective, and discover why scientists are so interested in these tiny musicians.

Join our Land Management team for a guided stroll through blooming native plants, busy pollinators and the wildlife that depends on them.

Learn about successional species, plant identification, characteristics and their ecological role within the landscape. We will discuss the importance of native plants and faunal observations within our restoration sites.

🌿What’s been your most unforgettable outdoor adventure?
My most unforgettable outdoor adventure was when I was studying abroad in New Zealand I was doing a research project on Marine debris. I was collecting data and was so focused on combing the beach that I didn't notice until a community member mentioned that orcas were right next to me. This Beach had a steep drop off so the orcas were literally within arm's reach of where I was working. I looked up and there they were chasing stingrays for their lunch. It was a mom and her calf. Seeing the orcas reminded me of the importance of the research we were doing. It gave us the concrete reason and gave a face to the work the local fisheries were doing to improve Marine habitat.

🌿What’s your favorite sound in nature?
I don't have a favorite sound in nature, but I do have a favorite smell. My favorite smell is wet Moss or the smell of the forest on a Misty day. Not when it's actively raining but when things are just damp.

From pond to discovery table! Hands-on science is the best science! 🌿🔬

Campers picked up their nets and became nature explorers! They carefully collected pond creatures, observed them up close and used identification guides to learn about everything they found and their important roles in the ecosystem. A day full of curiosity, discovery and hands-on learning about the incredible ecosystems right in our own backyards.

A mushroom's hidden neighborhood 🐜🪲

Some insects feed directly on the fungi while others can eat the molds, bacteria or other tiny organisms associated with the mushroom...

Mushrooms can retain moisture, creating a humid microhabitat that helps prevent small bugs from drying out. They also provide these insects shelter from predators and protection from weather.
