The "Yield Drag" illusion. 🧐🌾

If you walked past this test plot, you'd think the taller corn is the clear winner. But in farming, the early race doesn't always determine the final yield.

The shorter corn is dealing with a heavy mat of early-planted fall rye residue. It's colder and hungrier right now. But that exact same "problem" residue could become a lifesaver if July and August turn into a drought.

Which strip would you bet your paycheck on? 💵👇

Follow that Field 👉

One month after planting green, Joel Kasten's corn is continuing to establish itself through the terminated rye cover crop.

The rye residue continues to keep the ground covered as the corn is in its early-season growth. One of the main goals of planting green is to maintain living roots for as much of the year as possible while transitioning into the cash crop.

🌱 Interested in cover crops but struggle to find time to get them planted after harvest?

If your corn is at or around the V3 growth stage, now may be the perfect time to try the County's interseeder on a few acres.

Interseeding allows cover crops to be planted while corn is still growing, helping extend the growing season for cover crops and reducing the rush of fall planting.

The County's interseeder is available for use this season. Contact us to learn more about availability, scheduling, and whether interseeding might be a fit for your operation.

Check out Brian's soybean field that was planted green just a month ago!

You can really see how well those row cleaners did their job- clearing a clean strip for the soybeans to emerge while leaving the surrounding residue intact.

Also take note of last year's corn residue along with the terminated rye still breaking down. That cover is actively protecting the soil surface, feeding soil biology, and helping set this crop up for success.

Pretty cool to see how quickly things change when you keep living roots and residue working in the system! 🌱

Cover Crop Spotlight: Does Planting Date Matter?

Background: Each test strip was planted one month apart, late September and late October. The plan is to use as feed for his cows so no manure was applied. They were both chopped on May 22nd.

Goal: See how planting date influenced biomass production, nutrient capture, and soil health benefits.

Results:
✅ The September planted rye produced nearly 3 times more biomass (1.94 tons/ac) than the October planted rye (0.67 tons/ac).
✅ The earlier planted rye captured more nutrients overall, including approximately: 65 lb N/ac, 11 lb P2O5/ac, and 109 lbs K2O/ac
✅ The September rye also returned significanly more carbon to the soil, helping build soil organic matter, improve soil structure, support microbial activity, and protect against erosion.

Summary: While the October planted rye contained higher nutrient concentrations and crude protein levels, the September planted rye produced more total forage and more total nutrients per acre due to its greater biomass.

Final takeaway: When conditions allow, earlier fall planting of winter rye can maximize both soil health benefits and forage production. More growth means more roots, more carbon, more nutrient scavenging, and greater protection for our soil throughout the year.

As many of you are aware, nitrogen fertilizer prices are HIGH. Well one way farmers are trying to deal with this issue is through the use of manure as a nitrogen source.

Did you know that nutrient crediting through manure testing can pay for itself and potentially reduce nitrogen spending?

Check out the link below to learn more about the importance of manure testing and why it may be a worthwhile investment!

Manure is a valuable resource, and you can gain significant value by investing in testing your manure nutrient value, making it more cost-efficient to provide your crops with the nutrients they need. Nitrogen fertilizer prices have jumped again, up more than 25% from early this year. Urea and UAN pr...
