Arab and Muslim Women's Research and Resource Institute A nonprofit organization established to document Arab and Muslim women's experiences, promoting understanding of the issues that impact their lives.

The project strives to provide Americans of Arab and Muslim descent the opportunity to preserve, share, and document their life story in their own words. The ultimate goal of this project is to reinforce and strengthen the greater public’s cultural understanding of this particular
population. With better understanding, it is hoped that a greater sense of connection will be created between the American public and its immigrant population. The project is in the process of collecting, preserving, and making available the personal audio accounts of Arab and Muslim Americans to help educate others about their experiences in their adopted country. Along with collecting first-hand accounts, the project, when feasible, gathers the following information: recorded immigrant memoirs, original photographs, letters, diaries, maps, and any other pertinent documents that highlight the experiences of immigrants from an individual and
community-wide perspective.

Research Spotlight | Centering Women's Experiences

Gender, disability, religion, ethnicity, and social expectations don't shape women's lives one at a time. They intersect.

A new 2026 article by Enaya H. Othman and Rawan H. Atari-Khan, published in the Journal of Middle East Women's Studies (Duke University Press), explores how these forces come together in the lives of American Muslim women living with disabilities and those caring for family members with disabilities.

Drawing on feminist and cultural perspectives, the study asks how gender, cultural expectations, religious identities, and social attitudes influence their experiences. These are questions AMWRRI's research continues to explore.

AMWRRI was proud to sponsor the Wisconsin Muslim Civic Foundation Second Annual Gala this past Friday.

We are thankful for the chance to support an organization doing so much for Muslims across Wisconsin. Everywhere we turned, there was someone to hug, catch up with, or meet for the first time.

The live art was the highlight for us. Live artists worked all night, and by the end we were looking at Palestinian culture set against the Milwaukee scenery we all know. It said a lot about how much our heritage adds to this city.

It also felt very close to what we do. AMWRRI records and preserves the stories of Arab and Muslim women, and Palestinian American history and heritage is a big part of that. Friday was a good reminder that our stories get told in many ways, and art is one of them.

Welcome Amal Azzam!

We're excited to share that Amal Azzam has joined the AMWRRI Board of Directors!

Amal is an accomplished artist whose extensive body of work celebrates culture, identity, and the stories that connect us. Through her art, she has spent years honoring heritage, preserving memory, and giving voice to experiences that too often go unseen.

Her creative vision and deep love for our community align beautifully with AMWRRI's mission to research, preserve, and share the lives and contributions of Arab and Muslim women. We know her perspective as an artist will help us tell these stories in new and meaningful ways.

We're so grateful to have her with us and look forward to all we will accomplish together.
