SMAC leaders know that there is more than meets the eye in the arts. We engage artists, students, audience and passerbys through sharing positive emotions, nurturing relationships and giving meaning to life. In MKE, we are just one of the threads that create a beautiful tapestry towards our public health goals as a community.

May is Mental Health Month, and we want to take a moment to talk about something SMAC's member organizations have known for a long time: MILWAUKEE ARTS HEAL.

The City of Milwaukee named "Positive Mental Health" as one of three key priority action areas in its MKE Elevate plan. Small arts organizations across our city are already doing this work — building community connectedness, expanding access to quality education, and giving people spaces to process, express, and belong.

That's not an accident. That's what we have been doing, neighborhood by neighborhood, for years.

SMAC is in our third and final year of collective fundraising. To date, eleven companies have worked together to raise money to be shared equally amongst us. Our goal is $500,000 by December 31, 2026. Will you help us?

LOCATION | Studio Theater, Broadway Theatre Center, 158 N. Broadway, Milwaukee WI

In a seedy Oklahoma City motel room, a divorced waitress named Agnes and a soft-spoken Gulf War drifter named Peter are brought together by Agnes' friend R.C. Agnes has her reasons for holing up in a place like this, and Peter seems to understand the appeal of staying off the grid. What begins as an unlikely connection slowly unravels into something far darker: fears soon escalate to paranoia, conspiracy theories, and twisted motives, and small disturbances give way to mounting dread as the walls begin to close in.

SMAC - the Small Arts and Culture Cohort - has been working hard to improve funding and provide peer support for small arts organizations in Milwaukee since 2024. The eleven organizations in SMAC provide intimate, accessible programming in every Milwaukee zip code, blanketing the city with opportunities for creativity and self-expression.

Funding from SMAC has been vital to Milwaukee Opera Theatre, by providing us with financial stability in a volatile environment and enabling us to plan effectively for the future. Please consider a gift to SMAC this Giving Tuesday. Your investment will be transformational.
