More people in the world speak English as an additional language than there are native speakers of English. This article gives an idea what this means for monolingual English speakers.
English is the language that non-native English speakers use to communicate across linguistic barriers. For example, a Thai will use English to sell products to clients from China. In Rome, even outside the tourist areas, most restaurant menus are translated into English because that is the common language that the millions of tourists and residents from China and the Middle East know how to read.
By sheer numbers of their speakers, Chinese, Indian, and African Englishes dominate the English-speaking world. The grammars, pronunciations, and thought-processes of these third circle Englishes are not deficient forms of "proper English." They are legitimate Englishes that native-English speakers are going to have to understand if they are to be part of the global community.
Once a person has learned at least one additional language, it becomes easier to understand different Englishes. Something happens in the brain that makes it more open to to new sounds.
Overall, white British pupils in England were lagging behind their ethnic minority peers.
