In the spring of 2012, Amelia Day, a Georgia 4-H'er, founded 'Operation: Veteran Smiles'. This project was born out of the concern that over 35% of wartime veterans of the United States of America are returning home disabled. Many veterans are being treated in VA hospitals, and many are without family support. I have learned that veterans, who have served our country, are either depressed or suffer some form of injury, or both. After hearing these facts I decided to address this problem by starting a program that I named "Operation: Veteran Smiles". I decided to create this for many reasons, but one of those reasons is because my Father and Grandfather are both veteran Marines, who served during wartime, and who are disabled. Operation: Veteran Smiles, or OVS (for short), gathers donations of materials and sets up "Card Creation Stations" where we can make cards of encouragement and then have them delivered to those who have sacrificed so much for our Country. Additionally, Amelia collects donations of hygiene items & goodies that are put into care packages & delivered with the Handmade Cards. To date, thousands of Veterans have been the recipients of Homemade cards & OVS care packages to meet their basic hygiene needs. It's always a success if you count all of the Veteran Smiles that OVS gets to see during delivery time!
