We just can’t get enough! Enough bike racing, enough time with these friends, enough of this perfect spring weather in New England!

Blue Hills Racing was back in action this week at .league round number 4 in Portland, CT. The Belltown course is sneaky technical and so much fun to ride at speed! .grimley knocked it out of the park again with a race track and venue that rival the best race productions anywhere around. All while .catale sprinkles just the right amount of magic and sparkles to bring the whole thing to life!

BHR juniors put on another show in the boys and girls Open 1 category with Holis Butler making it three wins a row while our girls once again swept the podium, led by Lizzy Gilman and her thus far undefeated season. The ride of the day goes to 8 year old, Thea McElwaine, who dropped from 2nd place to outside the top 10 after a mid-race crash cost her over three minutes. With the help and encouragement of her fellow racers, she got herself back on the bike and back on the podium with a late kick for 4th place.

We love to see it! 💖💙

It may be a week off from .league competition, but there’s always a race day to be found in New England for those that just can’t get enough!

Lily Baczek flew the flag for Blue Hills Racing this morning in Baldwinville, MA, winning a cold and rainy girls 7-11 XCO. After joining our Devo team this time last year, no rider in the program has made greater improvements in their skill and strength than Lily. From total beginner to certified champ! We love to see it 💖🏆

The craziest thing happens when everyone in the group is constantly lifting each other up to new heights— eventually you stop to look around, and you’re all levels above where you ever thought possible.

The first ever .league Devo day kicked off the weekend on Saturday with over 150 K-5th graders taking the start line for a full lap of the Northfield Mountain XC course. A dozen of our development team riders made the trek out and showed the rest of New England how we do Devo in the Blue Hills! Nine podiums across all categories, lead by our girls Sofia Kemecsei 🥇 and Estelle Hediger 🥇 taking home gold in the K-1st and 2nd-3rd grade categories.

Saturday night was a quick shift of gears as our Race Team arrived for their inspection lap of the course, followed by pizza on the patio, and a spa night back at the team hotel. 🍕💅

Sunday brought temps near 90° and another stacked field of junior racers from around the region. Things literally couldn’t have gone better! Sandwiched between pre-race arts and crafts and a post-race ice cream party, our Blue Hills Racing team continued their display of excellence on the race track. Hollis Buttler took his second win in the Boys JS-O1 category while our girls swept the podium with 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place rides, led by Lizzy Gilman’s fourth consecutive victory this season, and rounded out by our speedy 2nd grader, Thea McElwaine, who earned her first trip to the NEYC awards ceremony.

What a team! ⭐️

In the same week, we received separate feedback that the girls on our team should, both “remember the races are meant to be fun” and also to “tone down the fun and games”. And doesn’t that just sum up the experience of being a girl in sports, or anywhere, really. Working hard, caring about your results? You’re up-tight, too serious! Throwing a dance party in your rainbow skirt, wearing enough glitter to be seen from space? They’ll tell you there’s no place for that here!

These people have never spent time around our team, of course, or girls in general, probably. But for those reading— let the girls be girls. Let them have fun, and let them compete. Let them be silly, and tenacious, and sparkly, and sweaty. Let them care as much, or as little as they want. Let them race bikes.

Between tie-dye sessions, temporary tattoos, and obnoxiously large portions of Italian ice, the girls of Blue Hills Racing put on a clinic between the tape at their .league race on Sunday. Lizzy Gilman won the girls JS-01 category, beating 22 other girls and every one of the 55 boys who lined up alongside her. The girls in this category posted 4 of the 5 fastest times on the day, with BHR girls placing all 5 in the top 8.

We love to see it. 💖🏁

7 is such weird age because what do you mean you still need us to cut your pancakes at breakfast and then two hours later you’re dialing in your own tire pressure and racing around an icy cyclocross course with women six (7?) times your age.

Thank you and the whole crew at for keeping the fire burning in New England for the past 17 years. 🧊🔥

2026 team registration is now open for Blue Hills Racing! 🎉 New for next year, we’re adding to our already successful K-5 Development program with a junior race team for riders in grades 5-12! And just like team Devo, we’re holding an equal number of roaster spots for girls and boys.

Ten years ago, .league was celebrating the addition of their 29th total girl to join the league across all of New England. For 2026, we plan to have more than that on our team alone!

Follow along here and share this post with any parents you think might have a girl or boy who’s ready to give mountain biking a try. We’re the home team to riders from Boston and towns south— Newton, Quincy, Milton, Braintree, Canton, Randolph, and more! DM us here or hit the link in bio for more info 🔗

Some parents would look at a rainy, 40° morning in November and think, “not the best day for a bike ride.” Other parents know what cyclocross is.

Congrats to Blue Hills Devo riders Thea and Elyse on finishing 1-2 in the girls race at Secret Squirrel CX!
