Building connections to better support Hawaiʻi’s military community!

Our Clinic Community Liaison, Ashli Merchant, recently joined Laura Canup of Wounded Warrior Project at one of her events to discuss how our organizations can better support veterans and military families.

We’re grateful for opportunities like these to strengthen partnerships and connect military families with the resources they need.

Earlier this week our team joined families and community organizations at Hawaii Children and Youth Day at the State Capitol.

We connected with families, shared information about our services, and met other organizations working to support children and families across Oʻahu. Kids who stopped by our table also had a chance to make their own “breathing stick” using pipe cleaners and beads, a simple coping skill they can use to help manage stress.

It was a great opportunity to be out in the community, build connections, and raise awareness of the resources available to military and veteran families.

Our new staff members recently completed their Basic Life Support (BLS) training, and we’re now officially all trained!

A big thank you to Kara Tavita and Puanani Tuulima from Fearless CPR for leading our BLS training and helping our team build these important skills.

We’re grateful for opportunities to connect with community partners supporting Hawaiʻi’s military community.

Recently, the Cohen Clinic at Endeavors participated in the Military Affairs Council and Resiliency Day at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. Both events brought together partners serving our local military community.

We enjoyed building relationships, sharing resources and connecting with service members. And at Resiliency Day, Erika brought the kendamas!

We’re thankful for every opportunity to share about our mental health services and how the Cohen Clinic can support service members through life’s challenges, stressors and transitions.

For many veterans and service members, fi****ms could be an important part of daily life and identity. They are also the most common method of su***de among veterans. Ask about fi****ms. Secure fi***rm storage and conversations about fi***rm safety can help save a life.

A common myth is that talking about su***de puts the idea into someone's head. Research suggests that asking about su***de does not cause or increase suicidal thoughts. Instead, asking directly can help someone in pain feel seen, supported, and connected.

Don't let fear stop you from reaching out.

Ask anyway.

We had a great time at Wheeler Elementary and Middle School’s Food Fest earlier this month!

Families, students and staff came together for an afternoon of food, connection and fun. Our team was there to share information about the Cohen Clinic at Endeavors and help students create a breathing stick, a simple coping skill they can use to practice calming their minds and bodies when they’re feeling stressed.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to connect with the Wheeler school community and support students with practical tools for managing stress!

What if the words don’t have to be perfect? What if you don’t need all the answers? Sometimes, simply asking someone directly and compassionately about su***de can help them feel seen, supported, and less alone.

Dr. Holly Scanes, Clinic Director at the Cohen Clinic at Endeavors, recently joined Hawaiʻi Public Radio to talk about Ask Anyway: Conversations to Save a Life, a su***de prevention campaign from Cohen Veterans Network.

Ask Anyway encourages people to move past the hesitation and start conversations that can help save lives. You don’t have to have all the answers. You just have to be willing to ask.

We’re grateful to Hawaiʻi Public Radio and Jacob Aloi for making space for this important conversation and helping us reach more people in the community.
