I wanted to share a personal update, but I also wanted to explain why I’m sharing it here.
This fall, I’ll be starting law school.
When I applied, I had to answer a question that sits underneath a lot of the decisions I’ve made throughout my life: Why this work?
I’ve attached part of the personal statement I submitted because the more I’ve reread it, the more I’ve realized it wasn’t just explaining why I wanted to go to law school.
It was explaining why I started Shared Essentials, too.
At first glance, those things don’t seem particularly related. But to me, they’ve always felt connected. Both begin with the same observation: there is often a gap between what people need and what they have access to.
Sometimes that gap is resources. Sometimes it’s support. Sometimes it’s simply another person willing to help carry the weight of something difficult.
Shared Essentials was built in that space.
Not because I believed community could solve every problem, but because I believed people shouldn’t have to face every problem alone.
Over the past few months, I’ve watched people donate to families they’ve never met, share resources, volunteer their time, and show up for one another in ways that remind me why this work matters.
As excited as I am for this next chapter, it’s also made me think about the future of Shared Essentials.
If this initiative is going to continue growing, it has to become bigger than Kenlee and myself.
The goal was never to build something centered around just us. The goal was to help build something that belongs to a community.
So if you’ve ever considered volunteering, helping fulfill requests, sharing resources, donating, or becoming more involved, I’d love to have you.
