Well-dressed zombies and a UFO over Newport Harbor were some of the reports sent to a state command post at Fort Adams during Saturday's statewide radio exercise that simulated a widespread electrical/cell/Internet outage.

Operating from Newport Fire Station 2 on Old Fort Road, local FRS/GMRS/Ham radio users collected radio reports from Middletown and Newport residents and sent them via a radio email system to the Jazz Festival command post.

The local action was part of a bigger exercise conducted by RI Emergency Management Agency and the volunteers at RI Amateur Radio Emergency Service.

Given recent "grid-down" situations in Spain, Portugal, California, and North Carolina, it's good to see Rhode Island towns working to become better prepared for a broad range of contingencies.

What the heck do Aquidneck Island ham radio enthusiasts do each late June at Portsmouth's Glen Park? This three minute YouTube recap provides the answer.

You'll see big antennas in the air, rookie hams (and visitors) practicing on-the-air using callsign NE1RI, talking to stations all across North America, a microwave STEM demonstration, a BBQ picnic, young kids on the radio, and talking through a ham satellite connection to Michigan.

Last week, Spain and Portugal lost electrical power for a day. Communications came to a halt; there was plenty of confusion. This week, the National Weather Service is featuring “Hurricane Preparedness Week,” and it is important for Newport County residents to consider all aspects of emergency readiness.

Kudos to Portsmouth's Common Fence Point Assoc. (CFP) for preparing ahead of acute hazards such as flooding from intense storms and extreme tides.

This week, CFP invited in project leaders from the Newport County Radio Club to inform members about a new, radio-based "community lifeline" network that's taken root on Aquidneck Island, Tiverton, Bristol, and North Kingstown.
