Teacher's Pet: Dogs and Kids Learning Together

Teacher's Pet: Dogs and Kids Learning Together Empathy.Hope.Perseverance. The intervention program pairs youth with shelter dogs for multi-week workshops.

TP strives to teach at-risk youth each of these invaluable character traits that will empower them to lead highly influential and successful lives. Current youth programs:
•Pontiac - Children’s Village / Oakland County Pet Adoption Center
•Oxford - Crossroads for Youth / K9 Stray Rescue League
•Macomb - Macomb County Community Mental Health / Humane Society of Macomb
•Clinton Township - Neil Reid

High School / Humane Society of Macomb

Current shelter volunteer programs:
•Oakland County Pet Adoption Center
•Humane Society of Macomb

During these workshops, youth will:

• Participate in positive, reward-based dog training
• Help modify dogs’ behavior
• Increase dogs’ chances of becoming adopted
• Ensure dogs can remain in their homes permanently
• Improve their impulse control and patience
• Meet twice a week (for two hours each time) at various schools and juvenile facilities throughout Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties

By providing youth and dogs a safe, therapeutic environment time after time, Teacher’s Pet helps them learn, grow and create fruitful futures together....

Thanks Melissa Miller for this information!

“Safe, humane communities!

Let’s reduce our expectations of what dog should find fun!

Do they like human interaction?
How long do you plan to be out and about?
Water sources?
What’s the temperature? Is it grass or asphalt? Paw safe?

Trigger stacking! A bunch of small irritants = less tolerance of humans being weirdos!

Hugs are restraint, dogs can track missing people sometimes hours after they’ve been somewhere. They don’t need you to put your hand in their space to smell you.

Kiddos under 10, folks over 65, anyone who moves differently means extra awareness when

Advocate for your pet. Are they tolerating the environment or loose and relaxed. Know their stress-signs. Have a plan for leaving if your dog says it’s time to go before you are ready.”

Animal Control reminds pet owners to watch for signs of stress as summer festivals, parties and outdoor events get underway.

Today we're sharing one very special shelter dog, Rosie 🌹💛

This sweet girl has been living at the Humane Society of Macomb since early April. For nearly 60 days, she's been waiting patiently for someone to choose her... and no one has. 💔

Rosie was originally adopted from the shelter as a puppy and returned just a year later for being "untrainable."

The ironic part? I met Rosie through Teacher's Pet training classes, and she is an absolute STAR STUDENT. ⭐️

Rosie's smile, enthusiasm, and zest for life are contagious. She's the kind of dog who's just happy to be here. During class, she learned sit, down, spin, paw, stay, and recall. Not exactly what most people would call untrainable.

She's smart, eager to learn, and loves making her people proud.

Rosie is friendly with other dogs when introduced slowly and properly, and she desperately needs a chance to get out of the shelter. We're starting to see a little bit of that shelter stress creep in.

Our class graduated yesterday, and honestly, my heart broke a little knowing I wouldn't be seeing her every week anymore.

So here's the plan: let's get Rosie a one-way ticket OUT of the shelter. 🙏🏻🏡

🐾 1.5 years old🐾 60 pounds of pure muscle and wiggly-butt happiness🐾 Smart, trainable, and full of personality🐾 Dog-friendly with proper introductions

How can you be Rosie's hero?

💛 Foster her💛 Adopt her💛 Rescue pull her💛 Share this post

Let's make sure Rosie's next chapter is her best one yet.
