Aloha fish friends, come get fishy with us! We’re screening some of our Florida films in Waimea on the Big Island on September 19th and we’d love to see you there. Florida folks — send your Hawaii friends our way! Thanks to Alison Week for welcoming us into her awesome Speakeasy Cinema series, and thanks to Uila Records , for letting us show some fishy films. Doors are at 6pm, come say hi! Also, yes, we’re in Hawaii! Newsletter subscribers, we’ll be sending out an update on what’s going on with Sereia shortly - so stay tuned. Not on our newsletter? We’re transitioning to Substack where we’ll be sharing fishy stories from Hawaii, so you can find us there.

The line up for the screening will include: larval fish, caviar, oysters, spiny lobster, and yellowtail snapper!

Another fun fact for you 🦈 Although there isn’t a clear consensus on how the nurse shark got its name, one of the most popular theories is that it is derived from the Old-English word ‘hurse’ which was used to describe bottom-dwelling sharks

We hosted a panel of sponge and coral experts for a Q&A session after one of our film screenings. Bill Sharp, a research administrator for Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, has had a long career in marine science and currently leads research efforts exploring the role sponges play in the hard-bottomed habitats of Florida Bay.

Dives is a Blue Star Dive Operator in the Florida Keys. This means they are dedicated to protecting the ocean and communicate to their guests how to responsibly enjoy the reef. On this dive the Giant Barrel sponges stole the show, but watch for the hammerhead that snuck by at the end of the dive!
Key Dives also regularly partners with I.CARE to host citizen-science dives to participate in coral reef sponge restoration.
