VETERANS DAY, 11/11/2020, A Day To Remember

Today, the firemen in Islamorada’s Bernard Russell firehouse hosted a tribute to all military veterans as a tribute to the character of the men and a testimony to American values. Attending were representatives from police, fire, Coast Guard and Islamorada’s American Legion Post 145. There, under the shelter of the station and written on the supporting columns were some powerful and bonding words which inextricably linked all parties. In large vertical letters, one word per post, these are the words:

Honor * Duty * Courage * Tradition * Pride * Brotherhood

The words are powerful, bonding and spoken to the men and women who stepped up to serve in America’s Armed Forces. On the eleventh day, on the eleventh month at the eleventh hour, thank you one and all.

Post 145 took the M37 to Islamorada Village Night Out and those who came to the event thoroughly enjoyed the beast whether photographed with it or the machine gun or behind the wheel (even if they weren't big enough to drive yet).

July 4th a special day for our country. The photos are from the Key Largo parade that the post participated in. It was quite a great event and I'm not sure who enjoyed it more, the children or the adults along the parade route or those who had floats in the event.

The M37 Weapons Carrier

When your life and your mission depended on a functioning truck, well, you just might have wanted to double check drivability, versatility, dependability because it carried supplies, towed artillery, delivered ammo, dispatched troops and served as an ambulance. Also, the M37 had an option to be fitted with a snorkel, to forge shallow rivers or streams.

All considered the M37 was a perfect fit, especially for the upcoming wars in Korea and Vietnam. Actually, in WWII it was called a WC51 (WC= weapons carrier), along with many other designations which were slightly modified in 1950 and renamed M37. When this new 1951 model rolled off the Dodge assembly line, it joined thousands of its older WWII counterparts already in service.

Today, this vehicle represents a slice of American military history, completing its missions as a proven and time-tested military workhorse. So when you touch it or come aboard, you might just feel something special, such as American pride, honor, duty and great accomplishment.

Needless to say, the veterans of American Legion Memorial Post 145 proudly presents this small piece of living American history to the adults, and especially the children of the Florida Keys to touch the past, live the present and envision a better future for the American dream.

Meeting at the VFW Lodge, on Friday, Jan.11, 2019, The Wounded Warriors returned to the Florida Keys for their annual Bike trip from Key Largo to Key West, once again to the roar of appreciative chants of USA, thank you and you’re the best, especially from the children of Plantation, Coral Shores and the Montessori Upper Key’s schools.

And it was there on the old highway, amid the flag waving and thank you posters, where hundreds of jubilant American kids, along with scores of adults paid homage and tribute to the proud and gallant wounded worriers, peddling the length of the Keys while honoring all of our military institutions with unmeasurable courage and pride.

Indeed, it was a jaw-dropping scene, but that’s what it only looked like, a small convoy consisting of 50 or sixty guys on bikes, a few police cars and motorcycles, a Key Largo ambulance and an old American Legion Army weapons carrier with a few more old veterans, all require just a few more words to tell how it felt.

The event was friggin’ awesome.

Just in case veterans ever ask themselves about why they joined or why they were there, the answer was quick to be found in the faces of the youngsters who displayed a unique mixture of appreciation, curiosity, patriotism, and pure joy. The look of this new generation is the direct answer of why we did what we did and what America would have become in our absence from the land, air, and sea. Sleep well kids, you earned it.

See ya’ next year.
