Appreciate Local 10 News for highlighting 8th-grader and Girl Scout Kassandra Seldin’s Silver Award project. It culminated with the unveiling of a permanent cemetery sign featuring a QR code that links visitors directly to the Military Headstone Geo-locator, hosted on the Miami Beach VFW website and powered by Badger, helping bring to light the veterans buried at Miami City Cemetery. It also marked the start of the Miami Beach VFW’s annual Day of Service cleaning and restoring military headstones.

Kassandra’s project represents over 20 months of after-school work documenting more than 1,700 veterans, with the support of over 100 volunteers along the way.

From the mentorship of VFW member and Badger founder, Alex Kruger-Dobrota, Kassandra’s vision was brought to life by building on online automated system to collect, organize, and turn that work into an interactive map for the public to explore.

Built by the community, designed to scale.

Today was about honoring the men and women who served and helped carry forward 250 years of freedom 🇺🇸

After more than two years of work, Miami Beach VFW Post 3559 alongside Girl Scout Kassandra Seldin officially unveiled a first-of-its-kind Military Headstone Geo-locator at Miami City Cemetery, identifying over 1,700 veteran graves.

What started as a Silver Award project became something much bigger. Nearly 100 volunteers from Girl Scouts of Tropical Florida, JROTC, VFW members, and community partners came together to document, preserve, and honor these heroes.

Powered by Badger and hosted on the Miami Beach VFW website, this geo-locator turns history into something you can see, find, and connect with, ensuring these names and stories are never forgotten.

Join us for Miami Beach VFW’s Day, a morning dedicated to honoring those who served by caring for their final resting place. Volunteers will come together at Miami City Cemetery on May 2, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM to clean and restore military headstones, preserving the stories and sacrifices of generations past.

This meaningful event will also feature a special sign unveiling led by Girl Scout Kassandra as part of her Silver Award project, where she documented over 1,700 military headstones across the cemetery. We are honored to be joined by JROTC cadets, the City of Miami and representatives from Commissioner Pardo’s office, and the CEO of Girl Scouts of Tropical Florida, Chelsea Wilkerson, as we recognize her dedication and bring greater visibility to this important history.

Whether you come to volunteer, learn, or pay your respects, this is an opportunity to give back, connect with the community, and continue the mission of service beyond the uniform.
