In an era marked by increasing polarization, disinformation, and organized manipulation, understanding and protecting against coercion is more relevant than ever. While the mechanisms of abuse and resulting harm differ in form and social context, there are striking parallels across abusive intimate relationships, gangs, sexual exploitation and trafficking networks, ideological radicalization, and, of course, cultic environments. Despite their prevalence, research and evidence-based knowledge of these phenomena remain relatively underdeveloped.

During the 2026 ICSA Conference, we will explore these topics with some of the world’s leading experts in the field, including psychologists, journalists, academics, health care providers, lawyers, and individuals with lived experience.

Mother’s Day can carry a profound and often invisible complexity for those affected by coercive and high-control groups.

This Mother’s Day, we acknowledge the experiences of mothers and children affected by coercive groups and environments. This includes mothers separated from children still inside controlling environments, mothers grieving harm caused while under coercive influence, second-generation adults navigating trauma and conflicted feelings toward their mothers, and survivors now trying to raise children differently from the systems they came from.

The impact cultic and high-control groups can have on the mother-child bond can be profound and devastating. We commend those who are actively working to process and heal from these experiences while building healthier and more meaningful relationships.

Cult-related abuse cases have long been difficult to prosecute.

But as understanding of coercive practices evolves, new legal pathways to accountability and justice for victims are beginning to emerge.

This article examines how courts and prosecutors are increasingly recognising the use of addictive substances as a mechanism of control in human trafficking and cult-related cases. It explores how evidence of dependency, debt, and fear of withdrawal may help establish coercion where traditional “mind control” arguments have faced legal limitations.

The article also considers how prosecutorial strategies developed in trafficking cases may inform future accountability in cult-related litigation.
