SGMA’s first appearance at … and what a debut.

Two poster presentations. An incredible turnout. Meaningful conversations. Powerful feedback. We received tremendous interest in our work, and the response reinforced exactly why Population Standards matter.

And yes… we all showed up in white.

Meet the Board | Brenda Crabtree-Ramírez, MD

SGMA is proud to welcome Brenda Crabtree-Ramírez, MD, to our Advisory Board.

Dr. Crabtree is an internationally recognized infectious disease physician-scientist, Professor in the HIV Program at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), and senior researcher at the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán in Mexico City.

As Principal Investigator for CCASAnet within the global IeDEA consortium and leader of the Mexico City ACTG research site, she has dedicated her career to advancing HIV clinical trials, improving care for people living with HIV, and strengthening the evidence that guides treatment worldwide.

Her expertise in HIV research, epidemiology, and clinical trial design will help advance SGMA’s mission to develop Population Standards that ensure clinical research and healthcare generate evidence that truly represents the populations they serve.

People are not only excluded from clinical research at the front door. Sometimes, exclusion is built into the fine print.

Every study establishes rules for who can participate. Some are carefully justified. Others are copied forward from older studies, long after anyone has examined whether they remain scientifically or clinically appropriate.

When a population is excluded without a clear justification, that population can disappear from the evidence.

Population Standards matter because evidence is only as strong as the populations it includes.

Invisible Populations: SOGI Data and HIV Drug Safety was published in The Lancet HIV earlier this month. For readers who do not have journal access, we have made the authors’ accepted manuscript available free of charge.

Honoring Dr. Michael Wohlfeiler 💛

Some people help build an organization. Others help shape the vision that defines it.

Today, we’re honored to recognize Dr. Michael Wohlfeiler, a founding member of SGMA, as our Emeritus Board Member.

For more than three decades, Dr. Wohlfeiler has been a leader in HIV medicine, advancing patient care, clinical research, and the standards that have improved countless lives. His contributions have helped shape the field, but his influence on SGMA has been just as meaningful.

From the very beginning, he believed that every population deserves to be counted, included, and represented in the research that shapes their care. That belief continues to guide everything we do.

Thank you, Dr. Wohlfeiler, for your leadership, your wisdom, and your unwavering commitment to communities too often left out of the evidence. Your legacy will continue to inspire our work for years to come.
