FPL | Florida Power & Light Company, Florida Council on Aging and United HomeCare® proudly kicked off this year’s Hurricane Meal Kits Campaign with a powerful show of community unity and compassion at the Allapattah Community Action Center.
Hundreds of hurricane preparedness meal kits were distributed to vulnerable older adults living in one of Miami-Dade’s most underserved communities. Each kit—carefully packed with three-days of shelf-stable meals, water and snacks— offers essential nutrition, hydration and peace of mind as we enter the 2025 hurricane season.
This campaign reflects United HomeCare’s mission to support aging with independence and dignity, ensuring that our senior neighbors are not only prepared, but also deeply valued and cared for.
A special thank you to the incredible team of volunteers from Popular Bank, FPL and AVUS Connect®, whose dedication and warm smiles made the day even more memorable. Their help in handing out kits ensured that every guest felt supported and seen.
The 2025 campaign launch marks the beginning of a countywide effort that will continue throughout the summer, reaching thousands of seniors in need across South Florida. With the continued support of our sponsors, partners, and volunteers, United HomeCare® remains committed to safeguarding the well-being of our aging population —one meal, one moment, and one act of kindness at a time.
“This campaign is about more than food; it’s about dignity, safety, and showing our elders that they are not forgotten,” said Carlos Martinez, President and CEO of United HomeCare. “We’re grateful to FPL and our community partners for helping us launch this important effort.”
Now in its 51st year, United HomeCare® is a leading non-profit organization providing comprehensive home health services to South Florida seniors and disabled adults. There’s just no place like home℠.

Congratulations to the Pickleball 4 A Purpose and AVUS Connect teams on this successful fundraising community event!

United HomeCare® proudly congratulates Ava Weissman, Founder of Pickleball 4 A Purpose, and their incredible team for organizing the 2nd Pickleball Tournament —an unforgettable afternoon of fun, friendly competition, and fundraising. And what a smashing success it was!
Thanks to the generosity of sponsors and attendees, Pickleball 4 A Purpose raised over $10,000, with $4,000 donated to United HomeCare to support our mission of providing nutritious meals to South Florida seniors facing food insecurity.
As Ms. Weissman shared: "With 100+ players and attendees, this wasn’t just a tournament, it was a day of fun, connection, and purpose. Beyond the game, we built lasting intergenerational bonds that will strengthen our community for years to come."
A heartfelt thank you to Ava Weissman, Pickleball 4 A Purpose, its sponsors, volunteers from the AVUS Connect Club at American Heritage High School, co-led by Bianca Maria Ceballos and Ava Weissman, Class of ’26, and all the participants for coming together to make a difference. Until next time—keep swinging for a cause!

Leana Martinez, a dedicated AVUS Tech Pals® volunteer, is on a mission to bridge generations through technology. By recruiting passionate volunteers from Florida International University’s American Medical Student Association Program, she helps bring the digital world to United HomeCare’s homebound seniors.

Our volunteers do more than just provide tech support —they offer companionship, reassurance, and a vital connection to the outside world. Our efforts combat loneliness and social isolation, proving that a simple video call, text, or online interaction can brighten a senior’s day and transform their sense of belonging.
