♾️ 💛 SEE IMAGE FOR A LIST OF DIAGNOSTIC LOCATIONS 💛 ♾️

One thing we hear from families over and over again is how overwhelming and frustrating the diagnostic process can be. Long waitlists, insurance questions, traveling to different cities, and the financial burden of private evaluations can make families feel stuck before they even begin.

An autism diagnosis does not change who a child is, but it can open doors to important supports, services, and resources that help children and families thrive. A diagnosis can help families access therapies, school supports, developmental services, accommodations, and community resources that may otherwise be difficult to obtain. Research also shows that early identification and intervention can improve communication, learning, social development, and daily living skills.

Many families in our area seek evaluations in:
• Southern Illinois
• Western Kentucky
• Evansville, Indiana
• Cape Girardeau, Missouri
• Louisville, Kentucky

Every clinic is different, so it is important to contact each location directly to ask:
• Whether they accept your insurance
• Current wait times
• Age requirements
• Referral requirements

One thing many experienced parents recommend is getting on multiple waitlists at the same time because waitlists can be lengthy. Unfortunately, many families also end up paying out of pocket for private evaluations in order to get answers and services sooner. That reality is far more common than people realize.

If you have had a positive experience with a diagnostic provider in our region, feel free to share recommendations in the comments to help other families.

*Murray State was included because there has been discussions on whether they offer diagnostic services. They used to offer children’s diagnostic services. As of right now, they do not. I reached out to verify and they do offer adult diagnostic services, but they need a referral from the physician.

Starting in June, the Illinois Guardianship and Advocacy Commission will host a series of webinars for Illinois residents and families. These webinars include Understanding Guardianship, Advanced Directives and Supported Decision-Making in Illinois. This is a webinar series for residents, families, guardians and the general public. The first webinar is "Understand Guardianship" and is scheduled for Wednesday, June 3 at 3 p.m.

Here is a description for the first webinar: Adult guardianship involves a court appointing a guardian to make decisions for an adult who is unable to make their own decisions due to disability. This presentation provides an overview of the roles, rights, and responsibilities of the courts, guardians, and adults with disabilities."

Elopement is when an autistic child or adult who depends on others for their safety leaves a safe space without warning. It claims an average of 8 lives per month in the U.S. -- most of them children, most from drowning.

Many people don't know this until it happens to someone they love.

If a child or dependent adult with is reported missing, search water bodies closest to their last known location. Every second matters.

And if you ever see a child alone and unsupervised:

1. Don't assume they're just playing. Check in. They may have autism and need assistance.

2. If they're near water, get between them and the water. Move calmly. Don't chase or startle.

3. Call 911 immediately. Don't wait to find a caregiver first.

4. Stay with the child. Speak calmly and simply.
