Youths Now Have Access To Shooting Sport Program by American Legion
The American Legion Post 144 in Metaline Falls, Washington, has partnered with the Metaline Falls Gun Club to bring target shooting training to the area’s youth. An American Legion program, the Junior Shooting Sport Program provides youths aged 8 through 18 (or 19 if a senior in high school) a dedicated time and place to develop and refine target practice skills including breathing control in various positions of prone, seated, kneeling, and standing, gun safety, and how to utilize a sling to steady their aim.
Successful students will have the opportunity to compete at regional, state, and even national levels as they progress. The majority of the expenses are covered by the American Legion program.
Three training sessions have already been held, and the response has been great with students even traveling up from Newport. Currently, the youths are using single-shot B-B guns with steel B-Bs (as opposed to copper B-Bs which do not fly as consistently true as the harder metal).
"The kids are really in competition with themselves," highlighted project lead Rick Stone. "You can take this discipline all the way through your life."
Through a generous, private donation, the program was able to purchase the B-B guns, mats, and targets.
Eastern Washington University ROTC donated Crossman Challenger PCO competition .177 Caliber Pellet Air Rifles to the Post 144 for the youth program.
Once requested, North Pend Oreille Lions Club donated $13,000 to purchase a quonset hut and build an indoor range. "We have such inclement weather here -- this was necessary," reflected Stone.
The Legion has also applied to the Kalispel Tribe of Indians for support.
Fundraisers are planned to help continue the program. They will be announced at a later date.
All coaches are volunteers and undergo background checks. The program charges just $10 per youth to participate and is open to all. You do not have to be a member of the American Legion to take part.
The group meets for target practice every other Sunday. The next dates are April 12th and April 26th. To get the most out of training, the youths learn in three stages. While one group is shooting, a second group is observing, and the third group is going through theory. The youth rotate through so everyone receives the benefit of the instruction.
